The Sociology Program at Mills College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Sociology specializing in one of the following fields: Health, Criminal Justice, Immigration, or Housing/Urban Sociology. The successful candidate will have evidence of exemplary teaching, publication and scholarship that will impact their academic and policy field, and a proven track record of mentoring undergraduate students. The candidate will also support the Master of Public Policy (MPP) program. The Assistant Professor will be responsible for teaching 18 credits per year, advising 25 undergraduate or MPP students, and other departmental and college level service. This position will begin in August 2019.
Mills students are very engaged learners with interest and experience in social justice work and social activism, and our curriculum highlights community engaged learning opportunities, creative intellectual work, and close mentorship with students. The Sociology Program at Mills College educates a very diverse group of emerging leaders including many first-generation students, students of color, parenting students, and LGBTQ+ students. The MPP Program serves a similarly diverse population of early- and mid-career professionals developing their skills as analysts, advocates, and managers for leadership in public service.
Candidates should have:
- A Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related field, completed or expected by August 2019
- Exceptional pedagogical skills at the undergraduate level
- Academic publications and a plan for continued scholarly engagement in the field
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- The ability to work with a diverse and dynamic student population
This is a full-time exempt position. Salary includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with college-matching after 6 month qualifying period.
