As one of the nation’s top schools of social work, Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in education, research, and evidence-based practice to advance social and economic justice and solve the most pressing societal problems of the 21st century.
The BUSSW currently invites applications from midcareer individuals with a commitment to research, scholarship and teaching in the fields of substance use disorders and/or violence prevention and intervention to join our faculty as part of the School’s efforts to further deepening its commitment to addressing these significant societal issues domestically and globally. The tenured associate professor position involves teaching at the graduate level of instruction. The position start date is July 1, 2019.
We are particularly interested in candidates that seek to promote health equity in the US and globally. The evidence indicates that the use of alcohol and drugs with liability for abuse as well as exposure to violence at the family, community and/or state level are widespread and associated with public health and social problems of great magnitude throughout the world.
Additionally, BUSSW seeks an individual who values interdisciplinary research and will actively pursue opportunities for collaboration across Boston University’s 16 colleges (i.e., Public Health, Medicine, Education, Rehabilitation Sciences, Arts and Sciences) and with scholars nationally and globally.
The candidate will join a dynamic school with an extensive research portfolio and supporting alumni. The School has surpassed its initial capital campaign goal of $20 million and now aims to reach $30 million. The candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with researchers in the Center for Innovation in Social Work and Health (CISWH) (http://www.bu.edu/ciswh/), an endowed research center, and the Center for Aging & Disability Education & Research (CADER) (http://www.bu.edu/cader/).
The School of Social Work is located in the heart of BU’s Charles River Campus and is currently ranked #10 among graduate schools of social work by U.S. News & World Report. With over 900 MSW and PhD students from across the U.S. and abroad, 35 full-time faculty and approximately 60 lecturers participating in the main campus, satellite, and online programs, the BU School of Social Work is a vibrant and diverse community.

The successful candidate will have:
- a doctoral degree in social work or related field (e.g., sociology, psychology, public health, public policy)
- an established research program aligned with the School’s mission to promote social, economic, and/or health equity in the US and globally
- a record of consistent external research from federal sources (i.e., SAMHSA, NIH, NIJ, DoD) and/or foundations
- a strong record of scholarly publications, and
- a national/international reputation as a thought leader in their field.
