Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Fayetteville State University seeks an innovative, energetic and collaborative leader to assume the position of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. As the chief academic officer and reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs works with senior administrators, faculty, and staff to fulfill the university mission and achieve the strategic priorities of Fayetteville State University and the University of North Carolina, especially increasing the number of graduates from underserved student populations who are well-prepared for careers and/or graduate/professional education. The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs has primary responsibility for fostering active and engaged learning experiences for students; supporting professional development and advancement for faculty and staff; promoting enrollment growth and degree attainment; encouraging innovative uses of technology in instruction, administration, and student services; increasing research, service, and outreach; increasing revenue from fundraising and grant writing;  and improving the academic profile and reputation of the university. The position is frequently called upon to represent the university and its academic mission to lawmakers, board members, UNC officials, the general public, and other external constituencies. 

Fayetteville State University is a historically black university founded by seven black men in 1867 as the Howard School for educating black children. Today, the student body, faculty, and staff rank among the nation’s most diverse campus communities. FSU is the second oldest state supported school in North Carolina and has a tradition of excellence as a teacher education institution. With program expansion, especially in online education, the university now offers strong undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts and sciences, health professions, business and economics, the doctorate in educational leadership, and is developing programs in unique and emerging fields. The provost will provide intellectual and academic leadership for the university’s educational mission.  The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate and will have substantial higher education administrative experience, including service as an academic dean.
