Title: Research Assistant 3 (Influenza Studies)

Working under limited supervision, coordinate research work in relation to mechanisms of immunity of influenza in order to understand why there is a decline in immune function with aging. The laboratory focuses on determining defects in the human immune system that occur with aging. The research assistant will be involved in the delivery of flu vaccine and characterization of immunology in aging populations.


  1. Responsible for the generation, collection, and organization of data obtained from immunological bioassays and tissue cultures (50%)
  2. Oversee subject recruitment and manage study operation including data management (10%)


  1. Co-author research projects related to the determination of defects in immune function resulting from aging (5%) May monitor the laboratory budget (5%) Carry out complex research assignments of a non-routine nature involving use multi-parameter flow cytometry (5%) Devise new protocols and techniques using the published literature initially as a guide for research projects involving a high degree of skill and training and coordinate this information with others as needed (5%) May assist in initial analysis of data using statistical software, including basic descriptive statistics and testing models when appropriate (5%) May teach and supervise research assistants and technicians on immunology bioassays and tissue culture techniques (5%) Perform routine lab maintenance including cleaning equipment and labware, disposal of biohazardous waste, and ordering supplies (5%) Perform other duties as assigned (5%)


Department: Daily contact with supervisor and lab members to maintain workflow.

University: Occasional contact with other departments to exchange information.

External: Frequent contact with VA lab members.  The employee will obtain a VA status to be able to work also in the Canaday VA lab where we have a flow cytometer for our studies.  There will also be contact with outside recruiting sites such as community nursing homes multiple times weekly during the flu-shot season.  This may involve going to the nursing home sites during recruitment times.

Students: Contact with students almost daily to maintain workflow.


May assist in supervising students and technicians


Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience in immunology is required. 

Education/Licensing:  Bachelor’s degree in science required.  


  1. Extensive experience doing immunology bioassays and tissue culture methods
  2. Ability to work in BSL2 setting with live influenza virus and potentially other pathogens
  3. Ability to multi-task processing of human specimens
  4. Ability to perform and analyze multi-parameter flow cytometry
  5. Strong organizational skills
  6. Some experience working directly with recruitment and sample acquisition of research subjects would be ideal but not mandatory.
  7. Phlebotomy skills are desirable but not required.
  8. Basic computer skills for data acquisition and analysis, as well as for the development of presentations.
  9. Scientific writing for presentation and manuscript preparation.
  10. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  11. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.


The employee will be required to work with blood and clinical material from humans. Use of Universal Precautions methods is practiced at all times. Will require the handling of live influenza.  Depending on the situation, we perform these studies in the certified Biosafety Level 2 Facility and BSL3 facilities that are adjacent to the laboratory. All special training will be provided and certification by the University as required. Radioactive material will be used on rare occasions in the laboratory.  Lastly, for fixation of specimens, low concentration paraformaldehyde is used.
