Position Summary

The Freshman Advisor would be responsible for collecting and disseminating educational information to acclimate Freshmen with services to increase retention and success.  The individual will assist in the planning of program activities and provide active effort and services to students to complete their post-secondary education and prepare for education at the graduate level.     

Responsibilities                                                                                                                                                           

  • Recruit students who would be great candidates for the Academic Achievers Program.  
  • Assist the Program director with the oversight of staff with institutional and programmatic goals and objectives.  
  • Follow and track the academic progress of participants in the Academic Achievers Program and provide students with assistance when needed and necessary.
  • Render academic and personal counseling to all participants and refer participants for tutorial assistance if needed.  
  • Assist in the creation of a variety of workshops (i.e. - college life, career, personal development, study skills, etc.) to aid in the acclimation of first-year students.  
  • Instruct a Freshman studies course to introduce new students to the history of the University and provide tools to aid in their transition from high school to college.
  • Provide assistance to the Office of First Year Experience with orientation meetings for students, parents and faculty.  Coordinate and plan mandatory assemblies, seminars and workshops for first year and transfer students.  

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s degree preferred in Education, Counseling or related field. Experience working with first generation and/or low income and traditionally underrepresented and/or disabled students.  Experience in a higher education setting, providing advising services or counseling to students who are educationally, economically and otherwise disadvantaged.  Valid NC Driver's license and willingness to travel geographically within the designated target area.

Physical Requirements:                                                                                                                                                                                                    

Walking, bending, squatting, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
