The Department of English at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time teaching-stream appointment in Creative Writing. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, and will commence July 1, 2019.
Candidates must have PhD/MFA/MA in Creative Writing or a PhD in English by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter; demonstrated excellence in teaching literature and creative writing at the university level; and a demonstrated commitment to the scholarship of teaching and learning as it pertains to creative writing. The successful candidate will have a strong record of publishing/production in at least one of the following areas: fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, television, comics/graphic novels. Evidence of excellence in teaching and of commitment to the scholarship of teaching and learning will be demonstrated through a teaching dossier that includes a coherent statement of teaching philosophy that is linked to evidence of excellent pedagogical practice at the undergraduate program level; sample course syllabi and curricular materials; teaching evaluations; teaching-related accomplishments, awards, and accolades; and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Evidence of teaching expertise may also include experience leading successful creative writing workshops and seminars and/or community-based teaching or pedagogical leadership related to the field of creative writing.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The position will be held in the English Department at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Located in the east end of Toronto, in the beautiful Highland Creek Valley and on the traditional territories of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit, UTSC English is home to a thriving creative writing program and writing community. The successful applicant will bring their talents and vision to bear our already flourishing Minor in Creative Writing (https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/engdept/minor-creative-writing) and to a proposed Major that is currently in development. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to contribute to and expand on our multi-faceted Creative Writing programming, which includes an annual Writer-in-Residence initiative, the student-run journal Scarborough Fair, the student-run Creative Writing contest, and the Creative Writing group's meetings and field trips. Most importantly, the successful applicant will teach a dedicated, talented, and supportive group of emerging writers. Many of our alumni have continued their creative writing studies at the graduate level, won contests, and published in journals, chapbook, and trade book form. The Department also offers Specialist, Major, and Minor programs in English literature, as well as a Minor in Literature and Film Studies. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in service activities in the Department.
