Asst/Assoc Vice President of Administration and Chief of Staff
The Assistant/Associate Vice President and Chief of Staff (COS) reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President (Provost). The Provost is the chief academic officer for the university, responsible for the quality of instructional and academic programs, the development of academic strategies and budget priorities, faculty personnel matters, and graduate and undergraduate studies and student success.
The COS serves as a principal advisor and aide to the Provost, handling a wide range of matters of institutional importance on behalf of the Provost and his office. This may include representing the Provost or Office of the Provost (OTP) on institutional committees or workgroups, working with members of the university’s senior leadership team, or working with myriad university stakeholders.
In addition, the COS oversees all operations of the Office of the Provost (OTP), including, but not limited to: management of staff; budget and personnel administration; adherence to and the review of relevant policies; internal communications; and workflow management. The COS advises the provost on a variety of strategic and administrative matters, including those relating to the schools, colleges, and other reporting units within the provost’s portfolio. The COS works with the provost, the provost’s team, and other senior leaders, including the president and the president’s team, to develop, execute, and oversee strategic UO priorities and initiatives.
The COS is a member of the provost’s leadership team and must be able to bridge from strategy and ideation to operations and execution. The person in this position is responsible for cultivating and maintaining strong professional relationships with key personnel in all areas of the university, including those reporting to the President, deans, vice provosts, and other vice presidents. A primary responsibility is engagement and collaboration across other leadership team portfolios to ensure OTP objectives are understood, supported, and met.
The COS handles many sensitive and confidential matters, and must demonstrate good judgment, creativity, tact, and a commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
