Primary Function of Organization Unit: NC State CVM prepares the next generation of veterinarians and veterinarian scientists, conducts bench and clinical research to solve animal and human health problems, addresses critical ecosystem and public health issues, helps protect the U.S. food supply, and promotes a clearer understanding and appreciation of the ramifications related to the growing human-animal bond that is at the center of these concerns.
Essential Job Duties: The Research Associate will independently design, perform and analyze cellular and molecular biology experiments. Research will work on two fungal organisms: budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and chytrids (Spizellomyces punctatus). Research will contribute to publications, presentations, and grant applications. Training will be provided by the PI or other qualified individuals for new skills that need to be learned on the job. The incumbent will develop research methods/protocols/assays and generate research results that will contribute toward publications and presentations. In addition to independent research, the position will support other research in lab, as listed below: - Serve as the lab manager to provide laboratory and supervisory support to the PI. - Order supplies and reagents for the lab. - Responsible for creating and overseeing a centralized Laboratory Records System (strains, plasmids, reagents), and help PI monitor and maintain the integrity of incoming and outgoing strains, plasmids, and reagents. - Assist the PI with grant management and submission. - Teach visiting researchers, students and staff to advance their understanding of research techniques and add to/increase current laboratory procedures skills. This includes training, calibration, and routine maintenance of key equipment (microscopes, flow cytometer, and bioreactors). - Train visiting researchers, students and staff in biosafety and laboratory procedures. - Maintain lab safety and compliance. - Review annually the safety plan with assistance of the EH&S Biosafety Officer. - Participate in annual inspection of the facility to satisfy institutional and federal regulations.
Minimum Education/Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or an undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution, or relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Department Required Skills: - Basic knowledge of molecular and cell biology. - Ability to perform standard molecular biology techniques. - Experience with fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry is important. - Computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Illustrator, Cloning and Sequencing software). - Strong written and oral communication skills. - An ability to work independently (primary responsibility for a study) and collaboratively (provide support for other studies). - Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail. - Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: - Experience with fungal genetics, bioreactors, or microfluidic devices is desirable, but not required.
