Job Overview:

Under the direction of the Senior Vice Provost for Research, serves as a campus-wide subject matter expert for electronic research administration (eRA) systems which includes all research-related software systems. Responsible for leading, coordinating and overseeing activities of the eRA unit within the Office of Research (OR). The major components of research administration include Grants, Contracts & Industry, Regulatory & Research Compliance, and Human Research Protection. Coordinates and executes analyses and tasks on behalf of OR related to the in-progress implementation of enterprise-wide research administration software for Drexel University. Liaison with Drexel Information Technology (IT) on all software used/proposed for research administration.

Qualifications:

 Master's degree in business, computer studies or similar field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Extensive knowledge and experience in university research administration. Extensive experience related to implementing an enterprise-wide research administration systems and/or building a data warehouse.
Significant experience in directly supervising full-time professional employees. Working knowledge of current human resource management principles and practices including position development and performance planning and management.

Demonstrated experience in at least two of the following: requirements analysis, data management or business analysis. Excellent skills in problem solving, data analysis, project management, change management and group process.

Essential Functions:

Leads the OR in addressing the essential components of the core enterprise system for research administration. Identifies new strategic initiatives and opportunities in electronic research administration that will facilitate researcher and institutional strategic goals; stays up to date with research administration changes and trends by attending conferences and joining relevant organizations. Leads business continuity preparedness related to research systems and data.

Works closely with researchers and research administration support staff to coordinate and implement tasks to:
Identify business process and procedural issues and solutions to improve the timeliness, transparency, and quality of research data; develop data definitions and data integration points that will support a logical model for the research enterprise and related systems; analyze and recommend high-level methods for data access and reporting that may be satisfied through research enterprise systems tools or separate university-wide business intelligence tools; facilitate and document meetings with subject matter experts; and formulate data access procedures that will maintain the balance between confidentiality, security and data accessibility.

Works collaboratively with Drexel IT technical staff to design/implement new software systems and vendor-purchased solutions with the goal of enabling system controls to support Drexel policies and strategic goals. Builds and runs database queries to provide accurate reports and data regarding Drexel research activities to auditors and the University. 

Manages the two OR staff responsible for supporting electronic research administration systems and related initiatives. Also provides support for maintaining and reporting on OR data and university research activity, which includes building customized queries for the Office of Research, the Office of Planning and Institutional Research, and academic units.

Maintains content to provide a user-friendly and responsive website with timely and comprehensive information about research project guidelines and procedures and useful tools to assist in proposal development and award management, procedure implementation, use of electronic systems and fiscal stewardship.

Supports the Pre-Award group with all system-to-system proposal software issues, ensuring successful submission, as well as supports the Research Accounting Services group with the integration of award data into the University financial system.

Develops and conducts training for staff and researchers on eRA systems. Works collaboratively with other OR units to ensure that the interrelated research business processes are effective and supports quality assurance efforts associated with business processes.

Develops OR IT strategy, in collaboration with OR units, schools/colleges, departments and other central offices. Works with peer groups and extramural groups to develop collaborative strategic goals for the research community to which Drexel belongs (e.g., Federal Demonstration Partnership). Maintains strong relationships with vendors of systems used by OR and participates in appropriate user groups.

Active involvement in national/international research administration professional organizations and maintenance of a professional network of other research administration professionals.
