Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities
The Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU), which serves as the collective voice and vision of U.S. Catholic higher education, is seeking its next president, to take office July 1, 2019. The association has nearly 250 member institutions and is governed by an 18-member Board of Directors, all presidents of Catholic colleges and universities. The ACCU office is located in Washington, DC.
The president of ACCU must be a servant leader who builds rich relationships with presidents of Catholic colleges and universities around the world, bishops and cardinals, members of the Curia, elected officials, thought leaders in higher education, and others interested in serving their institutions and the Catholic Church. The president shepherds a mission with meaning and is surrounded by persons who wish to make the world a better place. Few other people can so powerfully influence the national conversation on Catholic higher education.
The President and staff of ACCU initiate research, promulgate publications, convene conferences and institutes, and engage members one-on-one. As the present strategic plan for the association comes to its conclusion, the next president will have the opportunity to engage with the Board of Directors on sharpening the vision of the association and shaping future strategic directions and goals.
The Board of Directors expects the next president to be Catholic and has a strong preference for a person who has served as president or at the cabinet level of a Catholic college or university. He or she must have strong communication skills, be conversant with the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, and demonstrate familiarity with sponsorship, as well as with the hierarchical Catholic Church and its ecclesiology. The next president must have a solid understanding of contemporary higher education--including higher education policy at the federal level; the legal environment affecting Catholic higher education; and the governance, finances, and social, political, and cultural issues affecting campus life. The next president must have a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice in the context of Catholic Social Teaching.
The association values candidates with experiences working within the Church, with not-for-profit governing boards, and with government and Church officials. The successful candidate should have evidence of financial acumen and stewardship, fund raising success, and personnel management. A working familiarity with technology and social media is also important. A terminal degree is required, as well as at least five years of executive experience. Experience in a variety of institutions is desired.
