The Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for the position of Senior Associate Director for Student Success. The Senior Associate Director for Student Success will join a team of professionals making transformative moves to improve the retention, success, and graduation of undergraduates at Illinois, particularly, students who identify as first-generation, historically underrepresented, low-income, and/or academically underperforming. Utilizing experience and expertise, the Senior Associate Director for Student will take a lead role in the development and assessment of the student success and retention initiatives within OMSA, and lead our effort to continually improve support for student learning. Anchored in campus' strategic plan, this position will greatly enhance the department's ability to expand success for the students we serve at Illinois.

Primary Position Function/Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students and Director, the Senior Associate Director for Student Success is responsible for using specialized skills and training to promote student success and supervise multiple educational outreach, academic support, retention, and yield initiatives while working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision for the Office of Minority Student Affairs' Academic Service Center and Academic Mentoring, Programs, and Services units.
  • Lead the Office of Minority Student Affairs in the Director's absence.
  • Develop, articulate, and evaluate key performance measures and status of annual student success goals and objectives.
  • Develop and articulate a comprehensive plan of action for reporting areas to meet the needs of various student populations.
  • Develop and implement assessment strategies to determine the effectiveness of our academic support and retention services.
  • Ensure that weekly high-impact and cost-effective services are planned, developed, marketed, delivered, and evaluated.
  • Ensure that students' academic status is monitored, documented, evaluated, and reported regularly.
  • Collaborate with academic colleges to develop and support early alert and other student success efforts (e.g., supplemental instruction, mentoring, coaching, tutoring, workshops).
  • Coordinate targeted and collaborative work efforts with non-academic units (e.g., Undergraduate Admissions, New Student Programs, the Career Center, TRIO Programs, Illinois Leadership Center, etc.) and other stakeholders to develop outreach and communications strategies to increase student awareness and engagement in academic programs and services from entry to exit, especially for targeted student populations.
  • Work with staff and campus partners to establish training, policy and procedure manuals, instructional materials, and other resources for reporting areas.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate recruitment and hiring plan for professional and student employees in reporting areas.
  • Prepare and oversee budgeting process for areas of supervision.
  • Supervise professional and student employees responsible for service delivery, establish performance measures for all staff, and conduct performance evaluations for staff.
  • Develop, implement, and assess professional development and on-going training to ensure staff are providing high quality and high impact services and are current on trends and best practices related to retention, academic support, and student success.
  • Review student data and learning outcomes using various reporting systems to identify trends and evaluate factors such as retention, persistence, and graduation rates and learning outcomes to assess students' academic progress and success rates.
  • Provide monthly, annual, and ad hoc reports to Director and to college liaisons regarding service delivery and student success.
  • Give regular presentations on services and topics related to duties of the position to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent the director at meetings and events as requested.
  • Lead or serve on department and/or campus committees, boards, and councils as requested.
  • Assist with grant writing activities, including researching and drafting sections.
  • Monitor and account for the resources and inventories under supervision consistent with campus policies and procedures.
  • Lead or assist with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of department major events, scholarships, and yielding activities.
  • Overnight travel, evening, and weekend duties are required.
  • Assume additional duties as needed to further the mission and meet the operational demands of the department

Required Education:

Master's degree in Education or a related field. Other fields will be considered if the required experience is met.

Preferred Education:

Doctorate degree.

Required Experience:

At least five years of full-time professional experience: (1) managing, designing, and/or implementing academic support, retention, and/or student success programs (e.g., tutoring, advising, mentoring, supplemental instruction, TRIO Student Support Services, first year experiences); (2) supervising full-time professional staff; and (3) working with historically underrepresented, first generation, low income, probation, TRIO, or high achieving students is required.

Preferred Experience:

Proven experience administering student success programs at a large, public, flagship institution of higher education. Experience with learning outcome assessment and program evaluation experience; budgeting; strategic planning; grant writing, event planning, marketing, and/or communications. Additionally, experience using academic technologies, student information systems, tutoring management systems, predictive analytics, or early alert system is highly desired.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of education issues, barriers, trends, and research related to first-generation, low-income, and historically underrepresented students Ability to work with minimum supervision. Excellent judgement and problem-solving skills. Ability to thrive in, fast-paced and data-driven environment. Knowledge of best practices related to academic support, retention, and/or student success. Excellent communication skills. Ability to think quickly, critically and creatively.

This is a security-sensitive position. The chosen candidate is required to pass an extensive criminal background check prior to starting the position.

Appointment Status: This is a 12-month, full-time Academic Professional position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
