SENIOR EDITOR, PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE
Duties: The Pennsylvania Gazette is the alumni magazine of the University of Pennsylvania.
Founded in 1902, the Gazette is a trusted source of information for Penn alumni and friends around the world, offering articles about the activities and achievements of alumni, faculty, and students; advances in scientific and medical research, scholarship, business, and the arts; University programs and policies; and Penn history; as well as letters, essays, and alumni notes and obituaries.
The recipient of numerous awards for writing and design, the Gazette is published bimonthly, with a total circulation of approximately 290,000, and is available on the Web at thepenngazette.com.
Reporting to the Editor, will serve as Senior Editor of The Pennsylvania Gazette: responsible for editorial decisions in the Editor's absence, writing and editing major feature articles and shorter items, overseeing selected magazine departments, and soliciting and evaluating manuscripts for the magazine.
In Editor's absence, manage editorial process to maintain quality and ensure timeliness of the magazine.
Write 3-4 major feature articles annually for the magazine, edit 2 to 3 features, and write 12 to 15 shorter pieces for magazine departments. (Magazine departments currently include Letters, Views, Gazetteer, Arts, and Alumni Profiles.)
Oversee selected magazine departments as assigned: tracking University policies and initiatives, cultural and other events in the Penn community, faculty research and teaching, alumni activities, and student achievements to provide a reliable, comprehensive source of news for alumni readers; conducting interviews and other research; writing the majority of articles in selected departments, soliciting other contributions, and editing the work of other staff and freelance writers; and working with Art Director to acquire accompanying art as appropriate.
Solicit and evaluate article submissions.
Take a major role in future planning for the magazine.
Assist with copyediting and proofreading of each issue of the magazine.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Writing samples will be required for your application.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree and 5 years to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Ideal candidate will be a talented writer and editor with 5-8 years of progressively responsible editorial experience in magazine or newspaper publishing or a related field, including 5 years experience in magazine feature writing (preferably full-time).
Candidate must be an energetic, self-motivated individual possessed of a keen intellectual curiosity; be a gifted interviewer and researcher able to synthesize a wide range of materials into entertaining, informative prose; be able to meet rigid deadlines; have an interest in and familiarity with issues in higher education; and contribute significantly to planning for the magazine.
