Job Description
The University of North Texas at Dallas invites applications for a full-time Project Research Assistant in Urban Agriculture, beginning Fall 2018. The successful candidate will be expected to achieve excellence in research design, analysis, and data reporting, and to assist in development of the emerging Urban Agriculture program at UNT Dallas. As a part of this Urban Agriculture initiative, UNT Dallas has partnered with El Centro College, Dallas, TX, to develop a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) Degree that includes undergraduate agricultural training and advances students' STEM skills. This effort is being supported at UNTD by a $1.3 million grant from the Department of Education.

The Urban Agriculture Project Research Assistant will be responsible for providing guidance to STEM faculty in the development, execution, and assessment of research programs designed to advance STEM capacity by Urban Agriculture students. The Research Analyst will also develop and disseminate data about Urban Agriculture's progress to community, industry, and academic partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Expectations for this position include strong skills in research design, broad knowledge of research methodology, and excellent communication with students and faculty. This individual is charged with design and implementation of research programs that promote and assess growth and development of UNT Dallas students' STEM capacities, due to their participation in the Urban Agriculture program. The Project Research Assistant may also be asked to teach courses in Urban Agriculture. We are particularly interested in student-centric, innovative, engaging, and energetic candidates who will actively contribute to student success in Urban Agriculture and other STEM initiatives at UNT Dallas. Specific responsibilities are outlined below:

1-Work with UNT Dallas faculty to develop, execute, and assess Urban Agriculture STEM research projects, particularly related to students' capacity-building in the STEM fields
2-Work to identify opportunities to refine or expand Urban Agriculture STEM research initiatives
3-Gather input, data, notes, and responses to prepare detailed Urban Agriculture STEM reports
4-Efficiently manage and execute tasks associated with Urban Agriculture education and outreach
5-Coordinate the development of Urban Agriculture STEM databases for collection and dissemination of data

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Agriculture, Communication, Psychology, STEM, or other field related to research design and assessment
  • Evidence or demonstrated potential for excellence in pedagogical research and mentoring in an educational setting
  • Experience or demonstrated potential for developing collaborative community partnerships, internships, and community service projects
  • Demonstrated effective written, verbal, and team-building communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
  • Experience working with community college instructors and students
  • Evidence or demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching courses in the candidate's area of expertise
  • Evidence or demonstrated potential for leadership in academic program development
  • Experience in professional agriculture, such as farming, extension services, agricultural communication, and landscaping
  • Ph.D. in Agriculture, Communication, Psychology, STEM, or other field related to research design and data assessment
  • Academic experience working on a university campus with a culturally diverse population

Physical requirements necessary to perform essential job functions
Work is primarily sedentary. Sits comfortably to do the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, or lifting items weighing up to 15 pounds.
