About the Unit
The Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health (Ci3) is an academic research center established to advance adolescent sexual and reproductive health and well-being. Our work seeks to empower young people that have been marginalized due to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, gender identity, or other dimensions and address the larger social determinants that affect their sexual and reproductive health and well-being. Ci3 uses an asset-building approach, identifying young people's strengths rather than focusing on their deficits. Ci3 works with youth and faculty from diverse disciplines to design interventions such as games, apps, and digital stories that are then examined through rigorous qualitative and quantitative research in clinical, community, and educational settings. Our work is conducted in conjunction with our communications and policy teams. About Transmedia Story Lab: Ci3's Transmedia Story Lab (TSL) partners with young people and organizations to create transmedia stories and art works in participatory-based research projects. We create and tell stories across multiple media, study storytelling and stories, and identify ways in which stories can make shifts at the individual, social, and political levels. TSL works with young people in urban communities around the world. In youth-centered, programs young people come together to collaborate with adults from a variety of fields to create media about the perspectives and experiences of young people.

Job Summary:

Ci3 is searching for someone to direct the work of the Transmedia Story Lab. The selected individual will work closely with our team and affiliated faculty to direct existing projects and to develop and implement new projects. The candidate will work across a wide range of projects and should be dynamic, collaborative, and comfortable working in both a start-up and an academic environment


  • Creating a strategic vision for the Transmedia Story Lab (TSL)
  • Planning, facilitating, and documenting storytelling workshops
  • Assembling and coordinating teams to conduct workshops
  • Analyzing and studying assets from storytelling workshops
  • Writing research proposals and, when appropriate, partnering with Ci3 research team members to create and implement study designs and research tools
  • Writing academic papers, blog posts, and other forms of research and communications
  • Building communications programs with a variety of audiences to disseminate TSL products
  • Project-based collaboration with TSL's sister labs Game Changer Chicago and the Design Thinking Lab
  • Providing leadership in applying principles and knowledge relevant to research projects
  • Performs senior-level lab and/or research-related duties and tasks
  • Performs lead role in research projects; assists with project design
  • Oversees implementation of project, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making significant contributions to methodology
  • Oversees data collection, evaluation and analysis; designs and manages databases
  • Writes reports, articles and manuscripts; presents research findings at meetings and conferences, as well as to funding agencies
  • Conducts literature reviews
  • Trains and oversees the work of research support personnel
  • May manage other administrative aspects of the research project, including supervising research support personnel, tracking project expenditures, participating in funding negotiations, and assisting with grant and manuscript preparation
  • Responsibilities may include the following laboratory duties: independently performing complex technical duties; recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; monitoring and troubleshooting equipment; overseeing the ordering of supplies and maintenance of laboratory inventory; and ensuring laboratory compliance with all safety requirements

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience and Certifications:
  • Degree in a field of study relevant to the research being conducted within TSL such as film, media studies, communications, art education required; advanced degree preferred
  • A minimum of four years of related research experience strongly preferred
  • Advanced knowledge in relevant scientific field preferred
  • A strong commitment to adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and reproductive justice, asset-based approaches to adolescent development
  • Proven track record in writing and academic scholarship
  • Experience in preparing academic manuscripts and grant proposals

Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint required
  • Strong interest in narrative and storytelling
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with and lead a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse setting
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in management
  • Demonstrated experience in management and in serving as the research leader on interdisciplinary research teams
