The School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) at the University of Virginia is seeking highly qualified applicants for a non-tenure track academic faculty assistant professor position for the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program. The successful candidate is committed to excellence in undergraduate in-person and online teaching for SCPS degree and certificate programs and utilizes the principles of effective adult learning in order to include and benefit from the experiences and backgrounds of students. The incumbent remains current with scholarly activity within their area of academic specialty, as evidenced by peer reviewed publication, conference attendance, presentations at professional or academic conferences, awards, grants, or consulting related to areas of academic expertise. The candidate also provides effective academic advising for students, mentoring students' research projects, holding student workshops and is responsible for ensuring academic quality and compliance for programs as well as provides service to the department, school and university.
The teaching responsibility for this position is a class load of 4-4-2 (Fall-Spring-Summer), including online and face-to-face classes, and may include face-to-face classes at satellite locations in Virginia. This teaching load may decrease as administrative and other academic duties increase. The position is a 12-month full-time appointment with potential for renewal. The position is based in Charlottesville, Virginia, and may require travel to other sites throughout Virginia.
A PhD in Psychology or Communications field, and graduate coursework in Psychology and Communications (both fields) are required. Candidates must have demonstrable experience teaching courses composed of adult students (beyond traditional college age of 18-22); at least 2 years of experience teaching at a 4-year college(s); and experience teaching both psychology and communications courses at a 4-year college(s). Teaching experience gained while a student is acceptable. Excellent oral, written, interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to interact with a diverse group of students, faculty, and colleagues; skilled at identifying appropriate resources to support student needs; knowledge in adult learning principles; open to learn and explore new instructional techniques, including digital tools is also required.
