The University of Illinois seeks a full-time Associate Director of Event Strategy for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement. This position will engage and steward Illinois' audiences with the intention of moving alumni and friends through the donor pipeline.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement is charged with building relationships with our constituents and generating diverse resources that facilitate Illinois' academic, research, economic and public services excellence. Advancement brings together professionals in marketing, communications, alumni relations, and development to lead these efforts across the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Associate Director of Event Strategy

Reporting to the Senior Director of Strategic Engagement, in strong collaboration with the Senior Director of Special Events in the Office of the Chancellor, the Associate Director of Event Strategy is responsible for envisioning, planning, and strategizing event programming, content, and messaging for events on behalf of the Office of Institutional Advancement which will drive engagement and steward our vast audience of alumni, donors, and friends. The Associate Director of Event Strategy will work closely with the Strategic Engagement teams to ensure their efforts are in alignment with the overall engagement, solicitation, and stewardship strategies of the OVCIA.

  • Lead campaign and regional events strategy, including managing the events on site (in partnership with the university's Office of Special Events), directing program logistics, and liaising with presenters.
  • Initiate recommendations for speakers and content by maintaining awareness of faculty/student areas of expertise and accomplishments as well as philanthropic fund usage, and donor impact across campus.
  • Partner with the Illinois Alumni Association, as needed, in creating and producing alumni events such as Homecoming, alumni chapter gatherings, and other campus activities.
  • Analyze statistical data to make informed decisions about messaging, audience, location, and programmatic content.
  • Lead weekly event program planning meetings and follow up from these meetings.
  • Partner with the Vice Chancellor for Advancement and the Executive Director of Principal Gifts to plan principal gift cultivation and stewardship events.
  • Based on subject matter expertise, inform data capture, curation, and collection related to events.
  • Participate as a subject matter expert with the Strategic Engagement Director's team, to help guide overall vision and decision making of the SE team.

Position Requirements and Qualifications:


Required: Bachelor's degree.Preferred: Master's degree.

  • Minimum of three to five years of professional experience in higher education advancement.
  • Minimum of three to five years of professional experience in event planning.
  • Preference for experience working at the University of Illinois.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization and time management.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and the ability to manage tight deadlines and multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated success delivering high quality work while insisting on high standards for others throughout campus advancement offices.
Knowledge Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of higher education administration and university advancement.
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information.
  • Familiarity with large databases.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to the Association of Fundraising Professionals Donor Bill of Rights which is endorsed by the Office of Institutional Advancement.
