The University of Virginia School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking applicants for the Director, Office for Research; a Tenure-Ineligible, Open Rank Research Faculty position. The Director supports the SOM research community in collaboration with the research deans' group. Duties include: providing administrative support for strategic and other research initiatives, communication links between the Dean's Office and the research community, coordinating with other offices supporting research (VP for Research, SOM Office of Grants and Contracts, UVA Office of Sponsored Programs, etc.), supporting the development of new research infrastructure, and participating in building collaboration within and outside UVA.
Additional responsibilities include: providing a central point of contact for SOM faculty and administrators who seek support for or information concerning research activities and resources; administration of the Office for Research (including construction and reconciliation of the office budget and managing personnel); staffing committees and working groups in support of the research enterprise, including the SOM Research Advisory Committee; administering SOM internal funding programs and tracking return on investment; distribution of external funding opportunities; administration of the Medical Student Summer Research Program, fall medical student research symposium, and faculty research retreats; development and review of SOM and UVA research policies; approval of volunteers participating in SOM research; management and further development of the Office for Research web site; coordination with other members of the SOM research deans' team; and development, management, and reporting of data describing the research enterprise.
A Master's degree in science or engineering is required, and a doctoral degree or equivalent is preferred. The successful candidate will have substantial experience in biomedical research and research administration and at least five years of experience with externally funded research in an academic environment. He or she will have demonstrated ability to design, manage, and implement complex processes and programs, a track record of efficiently gathering, managing, and reporting data, and the ability to communicate information to customers within and outside of the SOM. He or she must have the ability to maintain professional relationships with leadership, faculty and staff, provide excellent customer service, and meet hard deadlines.
