College of Media: Instructor / Lecturer - Department of Journalism ( 100534 )

Job description

University of Illinois, Urbana - Champaign

Lecturer/Instructor in Journalism

Are you passionate about audiovisual storytelling? Does your skill set include the research, production and distribution of award-winning public service journalism across a variety of screens? Are you ready to serve as a teacher and mentor for students?

If you answered "yes" to all of these, you may be the person we're looking for. The Department of Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track appointment as faculty member at the rank of Lecturer or Instructor.

The successful candidate's primary mission will be to educate and motivate our bright students inside and outside the classroom, teaching them how to create audiovisual stories grounded in research, reporting and professional ethics.

Basic undergraduate courses may include reporting methods and introductions to audiovisual news gathering, editing and post-production. Advanced courses may include directing undergraduates and master's students in short- and long-form audiovisual projects for broadcast and/or online dissemination. Enterprising, public-service journalism will be foundational in all cases.

Faculty members serve on department, college and campus committees in shared governance and work cooperatively to continue improving the curriculum. While this is primarily a teaching appointment, faculty members are encouraged to continue producing their own professional work. Our hope is to find a candidate looking to build the future with us.

Candidates should demonstrate significant and award-winning professional experience in reporting and producing news videos. Ideal Lecturer candidates will have professional accomplishment and at least a master's degree in journalism or a related field. Ideal Instructor candidates will have professional accomplishment and at least a bachelor's degree. Ideal candidates for both types of appointments must be up-to-date with best practices across all media platforms.

Expertise in the following areas will be considered a plus:

• Team management

• Content distribution strategies

• Multilingual storytelling, especially Spanish

• Documentary filmmaking

• Teaching at the college level

Full time for this position means spring and fall semesters each year, called a 9-month appointment. Proposed start date is August 2019; an earlier start of January 2019 could be negotiated. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The department is part of the College of Media. The college also is home to Illinois Public Media (WILL-AM-FM-TV-Online), the public broadcasting service of the University of Illinois; UI-7, the university's cable channel; and CU-Citizen Access, a community-based newsroom. Champaign-Urbana is a pleasant college town with a modest cost of living and easy access to Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis.

Applicants should create a candidate profile at http://jobs.illinois.edu. Also required are a cover letter explaining how a candidate's background matches the position; curriculum vitae or resume; links to samples of work; and a list of full contact information for three references. All requested information must be submitted for an application to be considered complete. The University of Illinois conducts criminal background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer.

Full consideration will be given to applications received by Oct. 15, 2018. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The review will continue until the position has been filled. For further information regarding application procedures, please contact Jane Dowler at [email protected] or 217-333-2351.
