Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled journey-level tradesperson, which includes training equivalent to that given in a two year applied skilled electrical traineeship or an apprenticeship. Training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Candidate must be able to perform physical tasks of position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED. Experience working on high voltage systems.
Brief Descriptions of Duties: The Electrician will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the campus high voltage distribution system with duties to include the following:
- Perform preventative maintenance on high voltage distribution equipment according to prescribed procedures and schedule.
- Ensure protection against injuries (could be serious/fatal) and the failure of equipment resulting in University outages by taking extensive safety steps and required procedure.
- Learn the University high voltage electrical distribution system and switching procedures. The extensive University high voltage infrastructure requires continuous reliability, ensuring uninterrupted service to critical research and academic equipment.
- Must consistently maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of University assets and employees.
- Become familiar with the operation of both the mechanical and safety aspects of primary switches, circuit breakers and other high voltage distribution equipment.
- Under intensive training, become familiar with the University high voltage infrastructure.
- Using the knowledge of the National Electrical Code and NFPA-70E, read and understand drawings, standards and generator motor control diagrams.
- Using the knowledge, skill and ability, work with tools, equipment, and materials used in electrical system maintenance (megger, voltmeter).
- Respond to University electrical outages during the off hours.
- Assist with the preventive maintenance and repairs of emergency generators, and the natural gas infrastructure.
- Other duties as assigned.
The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
