The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto invites applications for a three-year contractually limited term appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Czech Language and Culture. This appointment will begin on September 1, 2018 and end August 31, 2021.
Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Czech Linguistics or Pedagogy by September 1, 2018 or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate must demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching, including North American expertise in teaching Czech language and culture courses, broadly defined, at the university level; excellent (native or near native) knowledge of Czech and English, and advanced knowledge of Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian; and knowledge of current teaching methodologies, culture-based instruction, and use of technology.
Evidence of excellence in teaching can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi, course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in language and culture (both in the original and in translation). In addition, the candidate will be expected to organize Czech extra-curricular events. In addition to courses in Czech, the candidate must also be able to contribute to the BCS (Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian) program, including through the teaching of language up through at advanced level.
