Anaerobic Digester Research Technician

Position Summary

The Land Management Office is seeking a Research Technologist to operate, monitor, and service all aspects of the Anaerobic Digester facility. Included in the operations is an anaerobic digester, associated material holding tanks, transfer pumps, biogas handling equipment, solid-liquid separation system, and combined heat and power (CHP). Duties include:

  • Follows established procedures to operate mechanical equipment associated with anaerobic digester, solid-liquid separation and combined heat and power systems. 
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment associated with anaerobic digester. 
  • Assists with compiling data, enters into spreadsheets, and evaluates to provide reports and operational status.
  • Maintains supply inventory.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of facility and equipment.
  • Oversees and instructs students as necessary.
  • Monitors and controls hazardous materials.
  • Performs maintenance and overhaul activities during shut down periods.
  • Works with Researchers and Graduate Students to implement Projects to ensure coordination and compatibility with digester daily operations.
  • Provides occasional tours and overview of general plant operational activities.
  • Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job requires a valid vehicle operator's license.

    Experience with mechanical or biological systems.

    Work Hours

    Friday-Tuesday, 7am - 4pm; occasional holidays and overtime may be required.

    Description of End Date

    This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

    Summary of Physical Demands

    Lifting and carrying replacement parts up to 75 pounds for equipment for periods longer than 30 minutes. Pushing/pulling boxes and climbing to top of tanks to check equipment. The position will require visual acuity, ability to work in all weather conditions and ability to wear a SBCA mask. This position works in close proximity with manure, food waste and restaurant grease.

    Summary of Health Risks

    Working in a noise area, physically intensive job.
