The Stanford School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences (SE3) develops the knowledge and talent to understand the workings of the planet and to help solve resource and environmental challenges. The Stanford Natural Gas Initiative (NGI) is a collaboration of more than 40 research groups at Stanford University drawn from engineering, science, policy, geopolitical, and business disciplines that works with a consortium of industry partners and other external stakeholders to generate the knowledge needed to use natural gas to its greatest social, economic, and environmental benefit.

NGI is seeking a Managing Director. The Managing Director is responsible for leadership and administrative aspects of the initiative. This primarily includes working with the Stanford faculty and research community to assemble and impactful research portfolio and developing a strong network of supporters and collaborators from industry and other external organizations.
Your Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop, with the Director and other key stakeholders, the research and programmatic portfolio of the initiative
  • Build and maintain the Industrial Affiliate program and ensure meaningful collaboration with industry and other organizations
  • Continually refresh strategic priorities of the initiative, in collaboration with Stanford and external stakeholders
  • Develop annual business plan and budget and ensure alignment with strategic objectives
  • Maintain and communicate views on important and emerging issues in natural gas science, technology, business, and policy
  • Visibly represent NGI and related Stanford research externally
  • Develop and ensure successful execution of the annual NGI Industrial Affiliates meeting and other meetings, workshops, and events
  • Develop strategies to grow organizational capability and research community ties in natural gas at Stanford
  • Develop alignment and cooperation with other pertinent programs at Stanford
  • Oversee all communications, development and outreach internally and externally to other academic institutions, businesses and organizations.
  • Ensure ongoing alignment between strategic and business plans and actual expenditures and execution

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies which could span multiple organizational boundaries.
  • Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational and staff resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.
  • Relevant subject matter expertise.
  • Strong project planning and management skills.
  • Experience in or knowledge of business process improvement methodology.
  • Ability to act independently and as part of a team.
  • Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.


In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • Advance degree (Ph.D, JD or equivalent) in energy-related discipline.
  • Knowledge of natural gas - spanning exploration, extraction, processing, distribution and lifecycle environmental impacts.
  • Must possess a strong understanding of the academic, corporate and non-profit settings.
  • Experience in a corporate environment, preferably in a natural gas industry
