Director of Rural Outreach

Summary:        

Reports to and serves at the will and pleasure of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean under the direct report of the Associate Dean for Predoctoral Clinical Education.  Manages projects, programs, grants involving Rural Outreach activities. 

Primary Responsibilities:

Rural Health Outreach

  • Work with Associate Dean for Predoctoral Clinical Education and Assistant Regional Deans to identify educational resources needed in rural Statewide Campus sites
  • Create and maintain web information on financial incentive programs, scholarships, and loan repayment programs for medical students and residents.
  • Participate in the development of continuing education and training opportunities for rural preceptors and medical residents.
  • Facilitate payment of school’s organizational memberships in WV Rural Health Association and the National Rural Health Association and actively participate in these associations boards or committees and constituency groups to be familiar with current rural health policy initiatives.Serve as school representative on planning committee for WV Rural Health Conference and encourage involvement of school personnel in submitting abstracts for both state and national rural health conferences
  • Identify opportunities as available for medical residents/faculty to have speaking opportunities at regional, state, and national conference regarding rural health activities
  • Serve as a representative of WVSOM on the Rural Health Advisory Panel for the WV State Office of Rural Health (SORH)  in WVDHHR/WVBPH/Office of Community Health Systems/Division of Rural Health and Recruitment
  • Participate in statewide Recruitment and Retention activities and outreach efforts, assisting in review of the state loan repayment applications as requested by SORH
  • Collaborates with the Director of the WVSOM Rural Health Initiative on programming
  • As directed accept positions on advisory boards which promote rural health development and research (i.e. Center for Rural Health Development, Inc. and Prevention Research Center)
  • Coordinate speakers/topics for the rural session of the AACOM sponsored Health Policy Fellowship.  Topics of study include the economics of health policy, federal and state health programs, access to affordable, quality health care coverage, vulnerable populations and culturally competent care, health professions workforce, health information technology, and rural health.

Residency

  • Project partner for rural residency development
  • Facilitate contracts with consultation on financial and programmatic aspects of residency development
  • Accept direction from and provide recommendations to the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education on potential for rural health outreach opportunities for osteopathic medical residency sites
  • Facilitate as needed technical resources for MSOPTI residency programs
  • Manage WV Higher Education Policy Commission rural residency grant
  • Coordinate resources for medical residents and newly placed rural physicians to participate in rural leadership fellowships
  • Serve as needed on MSOPTI  Graduate Medical Education Committee/Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education(GMEC/OGME) committee in regards to rural residency training opportunities made available through external resources

Performs other related duties as directed or assigned.

Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree with a Master’s Degree preferred.  A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible management or public health administrative experience is required.  Excellent interpersonal, communication, and grant writing skills would be preferred. 

Position

This is a full-time grant funded, non-classified position with full state benefits and is exempt from FLSA provisions regarding overtime.  Minimum starting salary is $60,000.  Salary will be based on education and experience applicable to the position as well as available funding. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and will require regular evening and weekend scheduling. Travel including overnight travel will be required to seminars (CME events), conferences and similar events.

This position has been designated as Essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM.
