Stanford University is seeking a Director of Faculty Compensation (Financial Manager 3) to provide strategic direction, manage and develop long-range faculty compensation programs to ensure effectiveness in hiring and retaining School of Medicine faculty. Ensure compliance of faculty compensation processes and systems in accordance with university, local, state and federal rules and regulations. Direct and develop the Faculty Compensation team.
In collaboration with the Executive Director, the Associate Director is responsible for:
- Development and maintenance of the SOM Faculty Compensation team which oversees faculty compensation programs which enable the recruitment and retention of faculty and clinician educators. This includes recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation for the Faculty Compensation team, which consists of one compensation manager, two analysts and three HR administrators.
- Identify and resolve strategic problems that affect the School's effectiveness in hiring and retaining the highest caliber of faculty. For example, develop recommendations on compensation packages for the highest caliber recruits for the Dean, Vice Dean, Department Chairs, Division Chiefs and DFAs; includes detailed compensation benchmark analyses for both clinical and research positions. Addresses compensation parity for joint appointments (both hiring and annual salary setting) with other Schools in the University. Ensure the School's compensation and federal and state regulatory policies are followed. Oversee the development of the School's submissions to the University's Board of Trustees' Compensation Committee. Sets faculty compensation policy for faculty assigned to leadership roles within the two hospitals. Represents the Dean to the Provost on all compensation matters for the School of Medicine.
- Develop recommendations for the School's leadership using complex analyses to design faculty compensation policies which support the School's mission to attract and retain the highest caliber faculty; for example, a new faculty relocation policy to address the effects of the new tax law and high cost of living, and a new CE medical leave policy. Key upcoming focus will be the development of faculty compensation models to support global work (professional education, second opinions, etc.).
- Develop analyses and make recommendations for faculty compensation policies which support the School's mission to reduce finance workload across the School; a recent example is the development of salary scale targets for the basic science and clinical departments and the redesign of the School's salary setting tool to provide salary guidance to the departments; and a lump-sum relocation policy which eliminated processing related expenses.
- Lead the development of new existing internal control policies, procedures and processes for the payment of faculty compensation including internal controls and auditing related to and consistent with those of the university, develop educational training in the area of faculty compensation.
- Partner with University and School of Medicine groups to address the integration of faculty appointment and payroll data from multiple systems to manage the Faculty Compensation processes; recent example is OAA adoption of the University's FASA process used by Academic Affairs for appointments.
- Lead the process redesign and implementation for internal Faculty Compensation transaction processes and other client-focused projects. Manage transition of VA parity salary program requiring comparison of Stanford appointment and VA salary payments to simplified approach. Lead significant outreach efforts by providing training, initiating departmental visits and hosting town halls for the communication of new policies/procedures.
- Oversee communications seeking Provost approval required for faculty compensation. Work with the University Housing Office to secure approval for University's faculty housing programs and represent the SOM view for new policy consideration.
- Oversee the application of School and University policies to all compensation transactions processed for the School's clinical and basic science departments and institutes to ensure the School's compensation and financial policies are complied with on a timely basis and legal and regulatory requirements are met.
A background in specialty finance in Academic Medicine with experience in key leadership roles creating physician compensation or financial solutions for the organization. Experience in leading process redesign or major project implementation. Able to initiate and maintaining effective relationships with University and hospital departments to ensure the school's interest are represented in policy decisions which affect Faculty Compensation. Experience in on-demand reporting and analysis to support leadership decisions. Experienced in ensuring payroll, finance and accounting procedures compliance while maintaining compliance with university policies.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Master's degree and eight years relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Advanced knowledge of Oracle or other business financial systems.
- Advanced understanding of financial principles.
- Advanced oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups and all levels of management.
- Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
- Strong leadership skills, previous experience in strategic management and leading large multi-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to delegate workload and providing direction/corrections as necessary.
- Knowledge of property management requirements related to Stanford or non-Stanford title of equipment and fabrications.
- Demonstrated competency in project management of a high volume of work, some of which is cyclical.
- If managing sponsored projects, ability to manage post and pre award administration for sponsored projects within his/her unit. Knowledge and fluency of governmental regulations and Cardinal Curriculum level I and II.
- Knowledge of procurement needs, including sole-sourcing, cost analyses, vendor requirements, and small business reporting.
- Experience working successfully with PIs, their administrative staff, the office of sponsored research and external sponsors.
- Demonstrated success in performing meticulous, high quality and compliant work.
- Ability to interpret complex research and fiscal policies, assimilate information from a wide range of resources and act like a mentor and resource to others.

- Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.
- Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry objects weighing 11-20 pounds.
