The Assistant Librarian's primary responsibility is to provide circulation, reference services and library instruction to the Pacific Oaks academic community. The Assistant Librarian serves as the first point of contact to the Library, manages day to day operations of the library, provides reference services to patrons, and responds to general information requests received by the campus Library. The individual will be responsible for the library's information literacy program through orientations, library instruction classes/or workshops and creating subject or course specific library guides. The Assistant Librarian is able to communicate and work effectively with a diverse campus population while also collaborating with faculty and staff.
This position is located in Pasadena and requires evening and weekend coverage along with travel to the College's off-site instructional sites in Southern and Northern California. The Assistant Librarian reports directly to the Assistant Director of Library Services.
- Manage the circulation operations of the library, including checking library materials in and out, registering new users, shelving books, and basic electronic reserve processing
- Process interlibrary loan requests
- Manage and oversee the training and scheduling of student employees.
- Provide reference and APA citation services to students
- Design, implement, and maintain web based tools and services (tutorials, research guides, etc.) that meet the needs of the campus community based on departmental goals and objectives
- Participate in relevant committees and interdepartmental activities to meet the needs of library objectives
- Collect, manage, and evaluate library statistical information for assessment projects
- Participate in the collection development duties such as ordering, receiving, processing, cataloging and routing of new monographic materials within the budget set by the Assistant Director of Library Services
- Develop and conduct library and information literacy instruction to students, faculty and staff in both course-related instruction and subject-specific workshops on campus, virtually, and at the instructional sites off campus
- Develop and conduct library orientations to the campus community at all modalities
- Provide support services and products that promote distance education in cooperation with other library and college personnel
- Promote library services and resources to users; visit instructional sites and promote library usage (some travel required)
- Provide support services to all distance learners (including our Northern California site, off-site cohorts, and online students) by interacting with students, answering questions and providing instruction

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Project Planning, including data analysis, benchmarking and continued research in library field and development

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Able to maintain professional relationships in an academic setting with diverse patron groups
- Ability to create and design web-based content for communication and outreach of library services and products
- Recommended experience with CANVAS, LibGuides, Koha and OCLC Connexion
- Able to facilitate and develop training, orientations, and similar presentations to various groups
- Advanced knowledge of library information systems
- Demonstrate a helpful, knowledgeable, and consultative approach to assisting a variety of library visitors including students, faculty, and staff
- Reference and instruction knowledge and experience providing instruction and library support services to off-site and online students
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and move books
- Masters in Library or Library Information Sciences degree (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA accredited program required. However, BA graduates in Library Sciences or fields related to Human Development, Education, and Psychology are also encouraged to apply
- Possess advanced computer skills, especially in MS Office
- Up to 2 years of experience working in an academic library. This position is ideal for recent grads (with prior entry level or internship experience) looking to gain in-depth professional expertise
- Familiar with OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) and copy cataloging
- Must have access to reliable transportation and be able to travel to instructional sites throughout the greater LA area on a regular (semester) basis
- Must be able to travel 1-2 times per semester to the San Jose campus in Northern California
- Candidates selected for the final round of interviews will be asked to prepare and present a 5-10 minute presentation on an "information literacy" topic of their choosing
