VICE DEAN INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT, PENN NURSING
Duties: Penn Nursing is currently ranked as the top school of nursing in the world and consistently leads the field in its innovative approaches to nursing science, education, practice and policy-making. Its cutting edge research continues to drive meaningful change in health care and health science and its undergraduate and graduate programs are consistently amongst the top-rated programs in nursing education. It also has a strong footprint in translating its research into practice and policy at the local, national and global level.
Penn Nursing recently launched its new $60 million Innovating for Life and Living Campaign as part of the University of Pennsylvania's overarching Power of Penn Campaign. The Office of Institutional Advancement is leading the ongoing planning and execution of this campaign which is currently in its public phase and slated to conclude in 2021.
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Nursing and the Associate Vice President of Development for School and Center Programs, the Vice Dean for Institutional Advancement is responsible for advancing Penn Nursing's priorities through a combination of strategic planning, relationship building, fundraising, communications, marketing and events planning.
Working closely with the Dean of Penn Nursing, the Vice Dean for Institutional Advancement is responsible for developing strategies and partnerships, both internally and externally, around priority initiatives on behalf of the School. In this capacity, the Vice Dean collaborates closely with other positions including Penn Nursing's Vice Dean for Administration and Finance, the School's Associate Deans, Department Chairs and other faculty members and administrators as well as alumni, friends and partners of the school to target areas of opportunity for Penn Nursing, represent their work, create strategies, build relationships and raise funds to advance the School's key initiatives.
The Vice Dean is also responsible for overseeing the marketing, communications and events planning functions of the School. S/He leads the department in comprehensive strategic planning to unify the School's messaging to external audiences and to streamline the department's ability to provide comprehensive outreach services and support to Nursing's internal constituencies.
The Vice Dean serves as a member of the Dean's senior leadership team and plays an integral role in programmatic, financial, and physical planning at the School with a major responsibility for fostering revenue generation. S/He works closely with the Dean in mobilizing an effective program to advance the School's effort for a more cohesive and organized advancement strategy. The Vice Dean will design and pursue appropriate courses of action for this strategy and will engage the School's Dean, staff, faculty, alums, Overseer Board and other participants in implementing and executing the determined initiatives.
The Vice Dean also reports into the University's DAR's School and Center Program and is responsible for supporting the University of Pennsylvania's overarching fundraising initiatives, as well as representing and advocating for Penn Nursing's strategic, fundraising and alumni relations activities. The Vice Dean will work closely with the University's central DAR organization, drawing on its support services, and integrating Penn Nursing's fundraising initiatives within the framework of the University's top funding priorities and within the University's overall fundraising design.
1. Provide strategic oversight to the marketing, communications, publications, development, and constituent relations activities of the School.
2. Develop metrics and strategies for pursuing major gift opportunities; engage the Dean, faculty, staff and volunteers in executing the required cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities.
3. Establish and execute a plan to engage and expand the School's Board of Overseers, its leadership volunteer organization.
4. Cultivate, steward and solicit major and principal gifts for the School with a primary focus on the School's highest level prospects.
5. Analyze potential funding sources and evaluate their potential to support the long and short range goals of the School; develop and implement strategies to secure funding from such sources.
6. Continuing to prioritize and maximize prospect pool penetration and design and execute strategies for expanding the School's prospect pool over time.
7. Solicit gifts personally when appropriate and establish effective procedures for sustaining donor interest and cultivating new gift opportunities.
8. Oversee and manage the development and promotion of key engagement strategies pointed at alumni and other primary stakeholder groups.
9. Oversee and manage the School's overarching marketing and communications strategic planning and implementation including responsibility for the school's digital presence (web, social media, etc.), its communications and media relations work, and its marketing to a variety of external audiences including prospective students.
10. Lead and direct a staff of managers and individual contributors (currently 14 FTEs) to achieve optimum results by:
* Communicating financial and key performance indicators and results to direct reports
* Establishing priorities and goals for each Director and department, and ensuring goals cascade to all staff.
* Managing staffing needs and identifying areas for organizational development updates or changes
* Guiding the talent identification and professional development needs, processes and outcomes within the entire division in line with the University's diversity and inclusion priorities
* Setting clear performance expectations and holding staff accountable for outcomes through frequent feedback and coaching
* Ensuring open communications among team members, engaging in team building efforts and holding regular staff meetings that embrace and support the group's diversity
* Inspiring and motivating staff to achieve optimum results for direct reports and their teams
11. Serve as a member of the Dean's senior administrative leadership team and participate in key School-wide initiatives where Advancement is a meaningful partner.
Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree and 7 years to 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Master's degree preferred; experience in higher education including direct solicitation of major gifts; knowledge of and experience in leading communications- and marketing-related initiatives highly desirable; experience in health care as well as higher education highly desirable; solid administrative skills and the ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize and motivate staff, faculty and volunteers to achieve fund-raising goals; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; excellent communication skills, both oral and written; high motivation and a capacity to work within the context of a goal-driven environment; ability to analyze funding sources and relate their potential to the School's long range goals, more particularly, to organize practical strategies to bring closure to gift opportunities; familiarity and appreciation of the role of Penn Nursing and its relationship to the University as well as understanding the importance of the School's mission and impact, and capacity to articulate that role and interact comfortably with those individuals and constituent groups crucial to the advancement of Penn Nursing helpful; frequent travel and valid driver's license required.
