This Division, with students as our focus, engages with a range of constituents including faculty, staff, parents, alumni, as well as other groups in the external community. The Assistant Dean should have strong conflict resolution skills, an interest in educating others about integrity, an investigative nature, and a desire to help guide Stanford students and faculty going through the University's conduct process.

The Office of Community Standards administers the student and group conduct processes; recruits and trains student, faculty and staff volunteers; and conducts outreach and education about academic integrity and student behavior in the Stanford community.


The Assistant Dean of Students in the Office of Community Standards will administer, implement, and interpret university and department policies and procedures; identify, clarify, and resolve highly visible or complex issues with substantial significance and impact that may span multiple areas, using expert technical and professional knowledge requiring independent judgment. The Assistant Dean will serve as Judicial Advisor and Officer, and fulfill other duties as delegated by the Director of the OCS.


  • Manage processes and programs to implement the goals of the Office;
    • Provide training to and support for students, faculty, and staff who serve in various volunteer roles with OCS as judicial panelists, judicial counselors, and other affiliated positions;
    • Meet with, assist, and advise the Board on Judicial Affairs;
    • Summarize and report judicial cases to University publications;
    • Engage in assessment of OCS initiatives;
    • Facilitate final appeals panels for cases in which s/he was not the Judicial Advisor or Judicial Officer.
  • Represent OCS programs and initiatives at meetings, conferences, and to both internal and external constituents.
  • In the role of the Judicial Advisor (JA), s/he is a neutral party in all cases to which s/he is assigned. The primary functions of the JA include:
    • Conduct initial meetings with responding students to inform them of their rights and responsibilities. Advise responding students, reporting parties, and potential witness about the judicial process. Prepare responding students for judicial hearings and advise them of potential consequences and verify information regarding the impact of potential sanctions for judicial hearing panels.
    • Document all panel and final appeals panel decisions, including sending final letters, creating final files, maintaining database information, and preserving all information consistent with the Student Judicial Charter of 1997 and OCS protocols.
    • Ensure proper placement/release of holds; ensure completion of sanctions; schedule hearings; oversee bias check procedures; communicate necessary information to all parties and relevant offices; execute other administrative details related to case management.
  • In the role of the Judicial Officer (JO), s/he acts as the principal investigator for cases to which s/he has been assigned in which a concern has been filed alleging a violation of the Honor Code, Fundamental Standard, or other University student conduct policy. Some specific duties include:
    • Receive reports of alleged student misconduct and determine appropriate OCS response, which may include referral to another office or initiation of a formal investigation. Notify responding student of the concern and names of the reporting parties.
    • Conduct thorough investigations, including meeting with knowledgeable parties and gathering relevant evidence. Determine if there is sufficient evidence to file formal charges.
    • File formal charges and inform responding student of charges, the evidence upon which charges are based, and the names of potential witnesses. Manage Early Resolution Option (ERO) for appropriate cases. For all other charged cases, present all relevant evidence at the judicial panel hearing and, if necessary, at the final appeals panel hearing.
  • Engage in critical analysis of student and program concerns to resolve issues which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge.
  • Analyze and develop report requirements, portals, and student facing communications.
  • Manage outreach programs, relationships with external community and university liaisons.
    • Create, implement, and assess community outreach and education efforts, including presentations, departmental liaisons, website, and promotional materials.
  • Provide direct advice to students on a range of issues including, but not limited to, academic progress, academic program policies, community standards, etc., in order to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
  • Interpret and implement university policy related to academic policies; oversee the implementation of policies and practices for a student population or school.
  • Oversee key processes, including contribution and direction on policy and program content.
  • Provide consulting advice to internal and external organizations; act as subject matter expert in a specialized field.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to review and analyze complex information.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
Certifications and Licenses:

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a diverse community of faculty, staff and students.
  • Must possess diplomacy, tact and the ability to manage confidential student information with discretion.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the undergraduate and graduate experience in a selective, demanding residential university.
  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and rarely pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
