The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for a Research Associate to work with the Quinn Research Group. The group's primary research foci are developing risk analysis frameworks for water resources systems and designing adaptive control policies for improved management. This work bridges hydrology, statistics, multi-objective decision making, and high performance computing.
The specific project will have two phases. The first will involve assessing the spatial distribution of risks to agricultural, hydropower, water supply and flood protection systems in the Susquehanna River Basin, with a particular focus on improving risk assessment to climate extremes. Subsequent analysis will focus on analyzing how parametric climate model uncertainty impacts estimates of the spatial distribution of multi-sectoral risks associated with these extremes in the future.
The successful candidate will have strong computational and mathematical skills, with preference for programming experience in Python, Matlab, R and/or C++. Knowledge of spatial statistics and Bayesian methods is desired. The successful candidate is expected to be highly motivated, to have good written and oral communication skills, and to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
A PhD in Civil and Environment Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or a related field, with experience in analyzing and designing water resource systems is required. The successful applicant should also have a track record of mentorship of undergraduate and/or graduate researchers and a strong writing ability as evidenced by prior papers and grant/fellowship applications.
