The Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL) promotes and advances the vibrant, intellectual endeavor of teaching and learning at Stanford. VPTL collaborates with faculty, departments, and other campus partners to enrich the depth and range of Stanford learning experiences.

The Associate Director works under the general direction of the Director of Graduate Teaching and Peer Learning Programs to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of VPTL's graduate teaching programs, continually assessing needs and appropriately initiating, maintaining, or expanding general and discipline-specific resources on teaching and learning. As a member of a highly collaborative VPTL professional team, the Associate Director contributes to a broad range of campus teaching and learning efforts, with specific management responsibility for programs designed to improve the quality of graduate student teaching. VPTL's graduate teaching programs serve hundreds of graduate students each year through TA orientations, courses, workshops, consultations, and other training programs.

  • Contribute to the vision, program management, and oversight of VPTL's graduate teaching programs; includes budget responsibility
  • Organize quarterly TA Orientations serving 400 graduate students per year
  • Hire, train, and supervise approximately 15 graduate teaching consultants; mentor consultants in terms of best practices and pedagogical strategies through ongoing training, observations, and analysis of user feedback
  • Assist Director with outreach and training for the MinT (Mentors-in-Teaching) Program, a training program for 60+ department-based TA mentors
  • Analyze quarterly teaching resource utilization data and make recommendations for resource use and programmatic improvements
  • Analyze existing and, as relevant, design/generate user feedback tools, special population surveys, and other surveys as needed to inform program decisions
  • Plan quarterly course and workshop schedule, including meeting with campus partners to develop and revise offerings; contribute to offerings by developing, teaching, and/or co-teaching pedagogy courses and workshops
  • Consult with individual graduate student instructors, and teaching assistants (e.g., via mid-quarter small group feedback sessions or teaching observations), especially as needed to train and back up graduate teaching consultants
  • Represent graduate teaching programs at classes, departments, campus offices, and campus events.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience:

    Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.
  • Advanced degree (Ph.D.)
  • 3+ years teaching experience in a college or university setting
  • Experience teaching with technology highly desired
  • 1-3 years in faculty and graduate student teaching development highly desired
  • 1-3 years in program management, especially complex projects with multiple deadlines highly desired
  • 1-3 years in student advising, mentoring, or academic coaching highly desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues pertaining to teaching and learning in a research university, including knowledge and understanding of TA development practices, student learning programs, or willingness to develop such knowledge
  • Knowledge of research literature in teaching and learning and the ability to translate that knowledge into practice
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in consulting with faculty and subject matter experts to assess learning needs and recommend high-impact learning solutions and learning curricula
  • Highly developed teaching skills and ability to organize and deliver effective educational offerings
  • Facility with current technologies that support teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to collaboratively and constructively with a diversity of people at multiple levels (undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, lecturers, faculty, and staff)
  • Ability to work independently and in teams and to take the initiative, especially in new ventures
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to listen effectively, to provide tactful feedback and support, and to use sound judgment in confidential matters
    Certifications and Licenses:
  • For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
  • Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
  • On-campus mobility.
