International Student Care Coordinator (Counselor)

Job description

Basic Functions: Provide case management, crisis intervention, outreach, consultation and administrative services to international students and students with intercultural issues. Advocate for students as they negotiate the academic, student life, and health care landscape through coordinating with staff and providers (both on and off campus) to ensure student needs and accommodations are understood. May provide direct counseling services to a caseload of 10-15 students.

Essential Job Functions: 1. Provide medical and behavioral health case management services to international students and students with intercultural issues. * Provide immediate crisis intervention and emotional support to students and families on a limited basis. * Provide assessment and referrals for students to both on and off campus resources and services. * Develop and maintain databases of referral resources and community services. * Assist with linkage and coordination between the students' service providers. * Assist students in navigating the logistics of accessing health care, from providing direct transportation or arranging such, to filing for insurance. * Compile statistical data on the assigned cases in accordance to the instrument developed to measure outcomes. 2. Provide direct clinical services. * Provide individual or group counseling to a limited number of international student students and students with intercultural issues upon assignment by the Associate Director for Counseling Services. * Maintain accurate, up-to-date clinical records. 3. Develop and deliver educational outreach and consultation to faculty, staff, students and other health care providers as appropriate, working in association with the Director of International Student Services. * Contribute to training of pre-orientation student staff, peer advisors, and Residential Communities student staff. * Develop written materials for faculty advisors about population-specific aspects of the international student experience as they may influence the transition to and experience of Denison. 4. Support and contribute to international student recruitment, retention and success initiatives developed by the Office of International Student Services, Global Programs and Admissions, and Dean of Students. * Maintain and strengthen liaisons with these and other university offices. * Attend 1-1 and team meetings held by the Persistence Team within Student Development * Demonstrate ability to multi-task and manage a workload with varying types of tasks. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Must have a Master's degree in social work or counseling. Must be licensed in the state of Ohio. Direct professional experience with college age population or young adults. Demonstrated experience and interest in working with clients from diverse backgrounds. Excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to form strong working/collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff members, and the ability to relate effectively with diverse members of the University community. Demonstrated experience and interest in working with racially/culturally diverse clients. Must have a current, valid driver's license and must be insurable under Denison's liability insurance policy.

Preferred Qualifications: Independent license or license eligible to practice in the state of Ohio. Previous clinical experience with international college and university students (may include internship training). Experience working as part of a case management support team. Therapeutic knowledge and experience treating a young adult population with a broad range of developmental issues and psychological and medical problems including, but not limited to depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, learning disabilities, sexual abuse and assault, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and complex medical diagnoses. Demonstrates knowledge and expertise using a trauma informed approach. Experience and knowledge of the unique needs of a student-centered environment. Experience in crisis counseling and response. Fluency in Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, or other Asian language(s).
