The USG is currently accepting applications for a Senior Legal Counsel in the Legal Affairs division. This attorney position in the Office of Legal Affairs will provide legal advice and guidance to the University System Office (USO) and University System of Georgia (USG) institutions on a variety of topics, focused primarily on transactional matters and organization functions.


  • Provide legal advice to the University System Office and USG institutions regarding a wide variety of areas such as: contracts and procurement; finance and business activities; real property; intellectual property; insurance; and the development and implementation of related Regents’ Policies and Regulations
  • Serve as the primary legal support within the Office of Legal Affairs for the USG’s Division of Strategy and Fiscal Affairs and work closely with the Departments of Accounting and Reporting; Budgeting; Business Services; Finance; Information Technology Services; Real Estate and Facilities; and Strategic Sourcing/Procurement in support of their activities
  • Together with Office of Legal Affairs colleagues, handle responses to inquiries from campuses, consultations on appeals, interpretations and enforcement of policies and procedures, and responses to legislators
  • Assist the Vice Chancellor of Legal Affairs and Executive Vice Chancellor of Administration as needed
  • Support the Office of the Secretary of the Board of Regents


  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school required
  • This is a mid to senior career position with demonstrated years of leadership as legal counsel or equivalent position
  • Membership in the State Bar of Georgia or the ability to become licensed within one year from appointment date is required


  • Knowledge of Board-level governance, functions, relationships and history
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, rules and regulations impacting higher education
  • Knowledge and understanding of faculty-related employment standards, such as those set forth by the American Association of University Professors
  • Knowledge of Georgia Procurement Law, Georgia Tort Claims Act, Robert's Rules of Order, student rights and employment law, Georgia procurement law, and state ethics and government transparency regulations
  • Exceptional analysis and communication skills including the ability to analyze, organize, and effectively present, legal issues, opinions and recommendations to a variety of constituents. Ability to manage multiple projects and demonstrate flexibility to accommodate shifting priorities of multiple constituents
  • Strong interpersonal relations skills including the ability to collaborate with others as well as deal tactfully and effectively with a variety of internal and external constituents
