About the Position

The Lead Instructional Designer supports the Universitys mission to advance the effective use of current and emerging technologies to develop innovative and engaging e-learning environments. The incumbent works with SJSU academic departments, industry, and other educational institutions in moving the University forward in providing new and innovative methods of delivering instruction through technology. This lead position is primarily responsible for implementing policy, providing guidance, and initiating curriculum design for e-learning, ensuring that the University's learning management system is properly maintained, working to enhance the facultys pedagogical understanding of technology in e-learning environments, and serving as an advocate for institutionalizing e-learning within the culture and administration of the University.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

1. Technology Management
-Maintain and administer the learning management system and/or other instructional technologies to serve the educational and administrative community with resources in support of instruction.
-Design course templates based upon research best practices and quality assurance.
-Design, develop, and maintain dashboards to reflect technologies supported by the department.
-Maintain innovative, research-based technology resources/resource lists.
-Translate application requirements into user-friendly systems and applications.

2. Faculty and Student Development and Support
-Design and develop online instructional materials that support academic courses/programs grounded in sound educational theory and best practices in instructional design.
-Work with faculty to develop teaching and learning environments that emphasize active learning and incorporate appropriate instructional technologies.
-Generate reports and analysis for Director.
-Support e-learning by designing, developing, and implementing tools and resources for students.
-Conduct workshops on educational technologies.
-Support faculty exploration of innovative technology/teaching strategies.
-Provide telephone, in-person, and online (e.g., email, web-conferencing) contact for administrative and educational support and solutions.

3. Online Courses, Program and Certificate Development
-Represent eCampus and work with Colleges/Departments/Faculty and to promote the development of online-based courses.
-Consult with faculty and staff to adapt existing courses and programs for online delivery and other forms of e-learning.
-Design and implement detailed plans and academic models for online courses and programs.
-Advise and communicate to internal clients and project teams on the instructional design process and explain instructional design rationale.
-Review analytics and develop reports.

4. Lead Responsibilities eCampus Initiatives
-Manage at minimum one eCampus core initiative from conception to implementation, annually. -Responsible for all project planning and management of the initiative(s), including resources, timelines, activities, deliverables, and communication.
-Provide leadership in design theories and methodologies application as well as systems design and technology integration.
-Responsible for developing and maintaining an annual report to stakeholders which details the appropriate design theories and methodologies for the SJSU community.
-Lead the department efforts for quality assurance in course design, such as course template adoption, outreach, course certification.
-Lead the efforts to conduct evaluation (at minimum two evaluation projects per year) of campus e-learning needs.
-Responsible for initiating and managing projects to address those identified needs, including the development and management of evaluation tools for courseware and curriculum as well as student self-evaluation.

Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study and five years of experience supporting information systems and technology.

Preferred Qualifications

-A Master's degree in a related field
-Seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience in educational technology, instructional design, distributed learning, or an equivalent discipline
-Experience in using and managing Learning Management Systems
-Experience with technical information systems and application program packages
-Experience with common software application packages used in higher education teaching
-Experience conducting research, gathering data, compiling analytics, and generating reports
-Experience in course development and design
-Experience in a team-based environment
-Experience in teaching workshops in higher education

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

-Thorough knowledge in using learning management systems and other instructional technologies, as well as, knowledge of software administration.
-Ability to understand, analyze and diagnose faculty, staff, and student needs and translate these needs into instructional solutions.
-Ability to facilitate quality control and ensure that the online materials and practices are successful by applying established CSU and Faculty Senate criteria to meet course learning outcomes.
-Ability to conduct research, gather data, compile analytics, and generate reports.
-Knowledge of training theory and practices demonstrated by an ability to develop and deliver technical training and user documentation.
-Proficiency and hands-on experience in web and mobile technologies with programming knowledge of Application Programming Interface (API) and web development tools such as Java, HTML, XML, and .NET.
-Ability to enhance web-based courses with knowledge of best practices and e-learning principles.
-Thorough knowledge and demonstrable skills in applying a variety of software applications and web-based authoring and publishing systems: e.g., Camtasia, Photoshop, HTML editors, WebEx, Microsoft Office, etc.
-In-depth knowledge of systems analysis and development, applications programming, and database analysis.
-Ability to design and develop user-friendly interfaces that comply with accessibility as defined in Section 508.
-Working knowledge of managing vendor-supplied application maintenance and patch life cycles.
-Knowledge of instructional processes.
-Knowledge of quality assurance practices regarding online and hybrid course design.
-Ability to understand, analyze and diagnose faculty, staff, and student needs and translate these needs into instructional solutions
-Ability to enhance web-based courses with knowledge of best practices and e-learning principles.
-Skilled in developing and conducting faculty training workshops and materials.
-Ability to teach/instruct faculty to integrate existing and emerging instructional and interactive technologies into their courses/programs. Strong consultative skills to assess user needs and provide appropriate support.
-Strong oral communication skills to translate complex technical concepts into terms to support e-learning.
-Possess leadership, collaborative and communication skills with a commitment to quality service and understanding of current and emerging distance learning and information technology skills.
