Under the general supervision of the Director, MBA Career Advising and Corporate Outreach, serve as Associate Director and Career Advisor of the Parker Career Management Center ("Parker CMC"), which serves the career development needs of the students in UCLA Anderson's full-time MBA program. Currently run by a team of 16 full-time employees and 1 part-time employee, Parker CMC services include a career series, one-on-one advising with a professional staff, the Anderson Career Teams (ACT) program (a second year coaching program for first years), ongoing workshops, and other programming. Additionally, the Parker CMC provides the Campus Recruiting Program to the full-time MBA students (MBA), and qualified fully-employed MBA (FEMBA) students, and executive MBA (EMBA) students.

The primary responsibility of this role is as an advisor in both generalist and industry vertical specific capacities. In this role, the advisor helps students work through the career search process, including self-assessment, networking, research, building a target list of companies on which to focus the career search, resume development, cover letter-writing, interviewing, decision-making and negotiation. The associate director will develop and/or enhance a deep knowledge base of several career industry verticals, most notably financial services such as investment banking, investment management, private equity, and venture capital, and for managing the needs of students seeking jobs in those verticals. As an advisor and in the supporting role as an industry (or industries) vertical specialist, s/he is required to interact regularly and easily with the related student industry clubs, as well as UCLA Anderson alumni employed in those industries.

The secondary role of the associate director is in corporate outreach, where s/he will spend significant time developing and enhancing relationships with firms that recruit MBAs both domestically and internationally. Accordingly, there is a strong external sales orientation to this position and a proven ability to work with senior executives and other decision-makers hiring MBAs. The associate director teams with the corporate outreach team to create and execute an outreach strategy for employer relations and to coordinate the external outreach efforts of the team. The percentage of time dedicated to outreach efforts will fluctuate according to the time of year.

Based on the above, a fair amount of MBA relevant prior industry experience is expected of this individual. In this case, prior industry experience in the financial services industry such as banking, investment management, private equity, or venture capital would be extremely helpful and preferred. The associate director serves as a central liaison with several career-focused student groups and clubs at UCLA Anderson, including acting as the Parker liaison with several of the Anderson Career Teams (ACT), aligned with his/her industry vertical(s). ACT is a program where second years coach first years based on industry or functional alignment, and the associate director is expected to interview and choose coaches and then execute the program for his/her verticals. S/he will also organize career-oriented workshops covering any facet of the career search process, presentations and panel discussions, and demonstrate creativity to organize effective programming. The associate director will be the lead contact within the Parker CMC regarding several club events and career activities. The associate director also represents the school at numerous networking events, career nights and off-campus Day(s) on the Job ("DOJ") events. The associate director works closely with other Parker CMC professional staff in developing an annual calendar of activity (MBA Programming Strategy) for the Parker CMC.

The associate director must demonstrate exceptional team skills.

Required:

  • Several years of MBA relevant work experience in an organization where people with MBAs are prevalent and the skill sets developed in an MBA program are commonplace.
  • Strong interest in business and knowledge of current business trends and a general knowledge of MBA employment markets.
  • Ability to empathize with and advise students seeking to change careers.
  • Ability to assist people in transferring current skills to new career opportunities.
  • Demonstrated advising abilities and an academic background or work background appropriate for advising work.
  • Particular joy and satisfaction in working with students to help them attain their career goals.
  • Demonstrated sales ability to effectively and enthusiastically represent and sell UCLA Anderson MBA students and career services to a wide array of top-level corporations and organizations. A convincing, outgoing and confident external presence is important.
  • Demonstrated relationship building skills, both within an organization and in dealing with external constituents.
  • Comfort and skill in communicating with senior executives and alumni.
  • Experience and ease presenting to large and small audiences.
  • Demonstrated creativity and ability to develop new initiatives.
  • Strong team orientation and demonstrated ability to be flexible and work as part of a close work team.
  • Ability to tactfully navigate potentially tense situations.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in the career services area, preferably with MBA students.
  • Experience working directly in the finance industry or with a client base within the finance industry.
  • Strong understanding of MBA curricula, the particular skill sets developed in an MBA Program and how they match with
  • MBA-related careers.
  • Experience with developing and implementing career-focused workshops.
  • Experience facilitating self-assessment workshops and knowledge of such self-assessment tools as Career Leader, Strengthsfinder, and MBTI.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to record/publicize outreach efforts and a working knowledge of LinkedIn for target company and contact list building.
  • Master's degree, preferably an MBA.
  • Possession of a valid CA Driver's License.
