Job Summary/Basic Function:
Position Summary:
The Senior International Student Services Specialist reports directly to the Director of the Office of International Student Programs and Services. Lamar University is seeking two experienced Senior International Student Services Specialists, who are passionate about providing guidance and support to international students, J1 Exchange Visitors and Scholars, as well as their dependents. The incumbent is responsible for supporting the total integration, retention, and success of international students, J1 Exchange Visitors, and Scholars at Lamar University. He or she will also lead and manage services for the aforementioned groups with an emphasis on meeting their social, academic, and emotional needs. The Specialist will assess all related programs for intended measurable outcomes, effectiveness and efficiency, and make the necessary improvement. The Specialist will work collaboratively with other departments to support Lamar University internationalization goals by providing effective and measurable outcome-based support to the Office of International Student Programs and Services. The ultimate goal is to ensure that all Lamar University undergraduate and graduate international students, J1 Exchange Visitors and Scholars, as well as their dependents, are regularly provided the opportunity to engage in meaningful and purposeful year-round intercultural, cross-cultural, social, and outreach activities, which are aimed at enriching their educational, cultural, and social experiences while in the U.S.
Essential Duties
Processes I-20s in SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information Systems) and all related certification requirement records for entry into the United States, and updates SEVIS files; reviews all required documents and processes DS-2019s for J1 Exchange Visitors and their dependents
Serves as Designated School Officer (DSO) for student visa/immigration compliance issues
Processes SEVIS I-20s and Ds-2019s under the guidelines provided by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS); Collects and reviews documents; updates records to reflect and changes; responding to questions via email and telephone
Provides general support for current international students and incoming students; maintains international student records, and assists with their recruitment and admission
Cross-trains with PDSO and assists in maintaining and updating SEVIS records for current students; completes OPT, CPT and OPT extensions; approves on-campus employment; processes program extensions, withdrawals, cancellations, reinstatements and terminations in SEVIS; processes and approves transfer documents in SEVIS; approves reduced course loads, changes in majors and requests to leave the United States; updates SEVIS databases, including alerts, data fixes and corrections; notifies international students of SEVIS alerts; and completes required SEVIS reporting
Provides recruitment support by answering prospective students' emails; provides accurate immigration information to international students, faculty and staff; helping to maintain accurate recruitment materials; and giving admissions related presentations
Assists with student activities, including event planning and publicity, as well as post-event programming assessment.
Attends and contributes to staff meetings, trains and supervises student assistants; orders academic health insurance for international students; and provides informational workshops to students, faculty and staff.
Advises students and assists them with general issues as they arise, including but are not limited to the issues of I-20s, visas, pre-arrival communication, orientation and familiarity with the appropriate University and Immigration policies and regulations, University and local communities, enrollment, registration, work, housing, student health matters, and billing issues. Assists in resolving problems with guidance, support and advocacy;
In collaboration with the Director of OISPS, provides full and ongoing assistance in the recruitment of international students to Lamar University.
In collaboration with the Director of OISPS and the PDSO, provides assistance in initiating admission and course registration process for regular international students, as well as exchange and visiting students
Attends to students' concerns/issues regarding registration, extensions, special circumstances, etc.
Serves as the OISPS Liaison to other academic and on-academic departments in support of all international students at Lamar University.
In collaboration with the Director, the PDSO, and other office staff, provides full and ongoing support in developing, planning, and implementing comprehensive pre- and post-arrival programs and activities for all new international students.
Provides educational and cross-cultural advising and support to incoming international students as necessary
In collaboration with the Director, the PDSO, and other office staff, creates, plans, and implements cultural, social, outreach, and leadership programming to help integrate all international students into the life of the University
Supports, empowers, and educates faculty and department chairs around all aspects of international student needs

Other duties as assigned:
The duties of the Senior Specialist may change as dictated by the changing needs of OISPS and those of the University. Thus, the staff of OISPS may be required to perform some occasional evening and weekend services as part of their responsibilities and as determined by the Vice President.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Required:
U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (required to be authorized on government systems)
Bachelor’s Degree Required
At least 2 years of direct professional experience related to international student programs and services are required. In-depth knowledge of, and applied experience with U.S. immigration laws and regulations regarding international students and exchange visitors
Demonstrated knowledge of statutory and regulatory issues related to F and J visas for university study
Experience with, and understanding of SEVIS
Knowledge and experience in cultural competencies, including comfort with those for whom English is s second language
Knowledge and understanding of student privacy (FERPA regulations), educational rights and responsibilities
Strong commitment to excellent customer service and successful interpersonal interactions
Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Experience in advising International Student Organization

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience as a Designated School Official (DSO)
Three years of prior experience working in an international student office; or at least three years of progressive responsibility involving student programming or advising at an administrative level
Experience studying, living or working abroad
Experience using Banner
