JOB OBJECTIVES: Evaluates financial needs of students from a variety of sources including documentation of financial status and personal interviews. Awards financial aid according to government, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines. The Financial Aid Advisor will conduct student need analysis, perform federal verifications and packaging of student aid, certify federal loan eligibility, provide financial aid counseling, make professional judgment decisions regarding student aid eligibility, and facilitate problem-solving with students and parents.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Job responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Counsels and advises students about financial aid eligibility, completion of required applications, eligible aid programs, costs, indebtedness, money management, financial planning, and financial information to the particular needs and situation of the student.
  • Collect and/or analyzes financial data on students to determine aid eligibility and make awards within federal, donor, state, and/or institutional guidelines.
  • Participate and present in all Open House events and orientations for prospective students.
  • Assists in the preparation of and presents information regarding federal financial aid, scholarships, employment and grants for various campus groups, high school students, and parents at meetings, group discussions, workshops, and recruitment sessions.
  • Monitor progress of incoming/continuing students in Jenzabar database, and run reports on weekly basis for supervisor showing status of each student.
  • Troubleshoot/resolve conflicts for students attempting to complete financial aid applications and forms.
  • Perform all packaging awarding, and disbursing notifications for all incoming students.
  • Assist with default management as needed. Assist with awarding additional funds, including increasing budgets for additional expenses.
  • Assist with importing and exporting loans, if needed. Import and post ISIR’s, clear verifications and c-codes.
  • Gain knowledge regarding financial aid programs and associated legislation.
  • Participate in training sessions, both in office and online.
  • Assist students in withdrawal procedures and potential implications on financial aid.
  • Maintain good community relations, customer service with other departments, students, and the public.
  • Participate fully in the growth of department by meeting personal and departmental goals.
  • Assist in covering the front desk area when needed
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates/Bachelor’s degree, preferred.
  • Minimum of three years in a Financial Aid and/or educational environment.
  • Experience with PowerFAIDS and/or Jenzabar preferred;
  • Experience with other FAMS is adequate.
  • Experience/working knowledge of federal financial aid programs, supporting regulations, working knowledge of Title IV program fund regulations, and U.S. Department of Education rules and regulations.
  • Experience/functional knowledge of current tax forms, regulations and the implications of such regulations on financial aid.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to stand or sit for up to eight (8) hours per day and lift twelve (12) pounds.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS/ETC.:

  • Ability to research regulatory information and resolve complex financial aid questions/concerns.
  • Ability to diffuse emotional situations with students and/or parents.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a significant caseload, and work independently.
  • Competency to effectively communicate in oral and written form.
  • Excellent reading, writing and math skills;
  • A working knowledge of MS Office with intermediate abilities in Excel and Word.
  • Must be able to work efficiently, multitask, be detail oriented and organized, a strong team player, and work with minimum supervision
