Reporting to the Vice Provost & Chief Information Officer (CIO) the Assistant Vice Provost /Associate Chief Information Officer for Academic Applications (AVP/ACIO) is a key IT leadership within the central IT organization. The AVP/ACIO for Academic Applications is leading, managing, and delivering complex information system solutions that enable and sustain the university's core educational and research mission. The portfolio of the AVP/ACIO of Academic Applications includes the educational, research and administrative technologies and services. Educational technologies support teaching and learning in classrooms and online, including the learning management systems, video management systems, video production, student response systems, graphic design, and instructional design. The AVP/ACIO supports the faculty's research through coordination of research resources and concierge services. Administrative systems and technologies support the university's business processes related to students, including admissions, enrollment, registration, orientation, financial aid, advising, student activities, student health, and career services. 


The AVP/ACIO of Academic Applications is responsible for the conceptualization, implementation and assessment of a roadmap and associated services for educational technology at UC Davis, both those used within the classroom and online. Drawing on the expertise of a strong team of operational managers, the AVP/ACIO will lead the development of a portfolio of technologies and services to support the instructional technology needs of faculty, students, and academic departments. 


The AVP/ACIO for Academic Applications oversees the development, standardization, and deployment of enterprise information applications and provides leadership to the teams responsible for maintenance and operation of enterprise student information applications. This position will also coordinate maintenance and enhancements of the information applications to leverage resources, knowledge and best practice and will work closely with leadership, serving as expert to support business process change. 


The AVP/ACIO for Academic Applications oversees the electronic accessibility program in concert with the accessibility governance group to make information accessible to the community at large. The AVP/ACIO is also responsible for establishing and maintaining a formal relationship and effective coordination with the faculty community on investments and priorities in support of our campus objectives for excellence in teaching and research. Specific groups include the Academic Senate, the Office of Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, IT governance councils, the schools and colleges, the Center Educational Effectiveness, the Registrar's Office, the Library, the Student Disability Center, UC Davis Extension, and campus academic support units. The AVP/ACIO represents UC Davis on various system-wide groups coordinating work in educational and research technology including the Educational Technology Leadership Committee and Electronic Accessibility Leadership Team.  


Minimum Qualifications: 

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

• 10 years of Information Technology & higher education experience. 

• 7 years of leadership responsibility managing midsize to large teams, influencing senior-level management & stakeholders. 

• 5 years of leadership responsibility for academic technology including evidence of successful leadership of faculty technical support. 

• Ability to analyze, understand & effectively communicate between business requirements & technical design. 

• Strong commitment to supporting the use of technology in instruction & research. 

• Experience developing programs that promote the effective & innovative use of technologies in discovery & learning, & that enhance student success. 

• Possess effective problem-solving, negotiation, & decision-making skills to influence management; as well as, internal & external partners. 

• Possess interpersonal, verbal & written communication skills, & presentation skills to clearly & effectively interact with a diverse group of individuals to secure &/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems, & negotiate services &/or agreements. 

• Ability to work with senior university staff, the general campus community, & senior technical personnel 

• Ability to demonstrate highly effective, productive, & motivational leadership skills. 

• Experience with state-of-the-art information technology applications & approaches. 

• Demonstrated track record of maintaining currency with technological trends & available solutions in the marketplace.  


Preferred Qualifications: 

• A combination of extensive experience, education, & certification as listed below are highly desirable: 

• Doctoral degree in an Information Technology related field. 

• 15 years of Information Technology & higher education experience 

• Experience teaching at the university level. 

• Extensive experience in higher education/academic environments. 

• Experience and/or knowledge implementing an ERP system in higher education. 

• Experience managing & coordinating technical, business, & operational objectives with Banner or a related student information system at a large university. 

• Knowledge & understanding of university organization, goals & objectives, & policies & procedures, & experience working in a higher education environment. 

• Knowledge of national & industry offerings & trends pertaining to design, development, & support of enterprise applications. 

• Knowledge of IT operation processes including asset management, configuration management, incident management, & change management. 

• Ability to assess performance & recommend new measures to improve performance.

• Ability to understand both the simple straightforward processes that represent the simplest business tasks to the most complex. 

• Ability to work with many individuals & populations both one-on-one & in very large groups. 

• Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic & multi-cultural environment with students, faculty & staff.
