Nature of Work

The University of Colorado Denver has an opening in the Department of Ophthalmology for a Professional Research Assistant. This person will work on various research projects within the University system on eye diseases. This position will involve abstracting data from the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). In addition, the person will be involved in recruiting patients at the University of Colorado Health Eye Center and its affiliates, collecting clinical information on study participants by interview and review of the electronic medical record and entering data into a database. The candidate will also be responsible for collection and processing blood samples and other biological samples from study participants. In addition, the candidate will help with IRB submissions and assist the PI and other faculty with data analysis for abstract, meeting and manuscript submission. The candidate will also be involved in other projects that require data collection and entry for other research in the Division.

Supervision Received

The position reports to Anne Lynch MD, MSPH who is the Director of the Division of Ophthalmic Epidemiology.

Supervision Exercised

The PRA might have to occasionally supervise part-time student workers.

Examples of Work Performed

Tracking patients with eye diseases for example patients who had cataract surgery. Collection of clinical data and bio-samples on study participants.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft office software, computer data entry, and data management.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to be team oriented and flexible
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision


Minimum Requirements
  • This position requires a bachelor's degree in a health-related field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the collection of clinical data, sample collection/ processing, statistics and data management.
  • Experience working with computers/Microsoft office software and computer data entry.
  • Phlebotomy.
