The Office of Inclusion and lntercultural Relations (OIIR) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications and nominations for Assistant Director, Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center. This is a 100% time, non-tenured Academic Professional Appointment.

The Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center (BNAACC) promotes cross-cultural understanding of African American culture and heritage, and provides educational and cultural support for students of African descent in our university community. Originally named the Afro American Cultural Program in 1969, the Center was established on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus with the two-fold purpose of assisting the university in providing a safe and welcoming environment for African American students, and to be a resource to the campus and community regarding African American history, contributions, and issues. In 2004, the African American Cultural Center was rededicated in the name of the former Director, Bruce D. Nesbitt.

The successful candidate will be working on a campus with an academically talented and diverse student population, including 23 percent international students, 18 percent Asian American students, 6 percent African American students, and 10 percent Hispanic/Latino students from a total enrollment of nearly 47,000 students.

The Assistant Director reports to the Director. Primary responsibilities include developing, implementing and coordinating programs, services and activities. The activities have the goal of educating and promoting a campus-wide understanding of the African American culture.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Cultural Programming:

  • Develop programs and events that highlight African American history and culture. Collaborate with other OIIR units to develop programs that encompass various intersecting identities (i.e. faith, gender identity, ability status, multiracial) with the Black community.
  • Coordinate Black History Month events with various Illinois departments and create marketing specifically for the heritage month celebration.
  • Create programs centering on Kwanzaa and its importance to people of African descent.
  • Obtain funding support for BNAACC programs through co-sponsorships, grant-writing, and the Student Cultural
  • Programming Fee (SCPF).
  • Maintain documentation/files on all events, including but not limited to program sign-in sheets, assessments, photo albums and video archives.

Campus-Community Outreach:
  • Oversee "Food for the Soul," BNAACC's weekly Lunch on Us program; select lunch topics, schedule guest speakers, and create evaluations for the lunch programs.
  • Develop and implement a departmental volunteer program which connects students to local non-profits, after-school programs, local churches, and community centers (i.e. Boys & Girls Club).
  • Develop engagement programs with Black alumni including Homecoming, Dad's Weekend, and Mom's Weekend activities.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Office of Admissions and visiting high school groups.
  • Coordinate and supervise arrangements for recruiting forums, fairs, on- and off-campus presentations, special weekend programs, and other special recruiting events and activities that highlight BNAACC and the African American student community at Illinois.

Student Support:
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate student interns and recruit student volunteers for center-community outreach.
  • Advise Black registered student organizations (RSOs) and create leadership development workshops for their Executive Board members and general membership.

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Required: Master's degree, preferably in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or related field.


Required: Two years of experience, as a professional or as a student, with African American organizations. Experience coordinating cultural, social, educational, and/or social justice programs.

Preferred: Experience designing and implementing programs focusing on African American students (and more broadly, people
throughouot the African diaspora. Professional experience advising and creating leadership development opportunities for students and/or student organizations. Experience developing community and public engagement programs, and public speaking. Experience in marketing and communications (e.g., electronic newsletters, websites, social media). Experience supervising and training student staff (undergraduate and/or graduate) and volunteers.

Salary and Appointment Status: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time (100%), benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month basis.
