The permanent collection of The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia consists of nearly 14,000 objects. In support of our academic mission, the Museum provides opportunities for study and scholarship through direct engagement with the collection and virtual access through digital resources. Our open storage and study areas the Joanne B. Robinson Object Study Gallery, the Print Study Gallery, and Painting Storage offer further insight into the collection for faculty, students, and the general public. Highlights of The Museum's collection include European and American painting, photography, works on paper, African art, Asian art, Pre-Columbian art, and Native American art.
The Fralin Museum of Art is seeking an experienced Chief Registrar and Collection Manager. The incumbent supervises the Collections Department staff and coordinates training and work of interns, student workers and volunteers. They are also a member of Senior Staff, Loan Agreements (Incoming, Outgoing, Long Term), Advancement (Promised Gifts, Grants and Funding), Insurance/Risk Management, Collections Committee, AAM Re-accreditation (disaster preparedness plan, collections management policy, continuation of operations plan, strategic plan).
A Bachelor's degree in Art History or related field is required, however equivalent experience my substitute for a degree. A Master's degree in Museum Studies or equivalent experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will have 4-7 years of experience in museum registration and collections management, in addition to experience managing personnel, complex multi-year projects, and financial administration. Experience working in a university museum setting is preferred.
In-depth knowledge of best practices in museum registration and collections care and management is required, as are skills in management and administration. The ability to manage personnel and multiple projects simultaneously is essential. Knowledge of AAM accreditation, creating collection policy and procedures, standards of legal contracts and loan agreements is highly desirable. In addition, experience with Microsoft Office Suite, EmBark or other collections management software is required.
