Job Summary:

  • Principal contributions are scientific or intellectual, characterized by originality and creativity partnered to strong organizational and managerial skills.
  • Partner up with PI, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and/or other research professionals with on-going projects that focus on understanding the role of autophagy, mitochondrial function and cell death in cancer progression and metastasis.
  • Participate in cell culture of primary and established tumor cell lines, application of molecular and immunological approaches, as well as play the key role in the management and study of mouse models of cancer used by the lab.

  • Participate in growing primary epithelial cells and tumor cell lines in tissue culture and maintaining well-recorded frozen stocks of all lines, oversee proper screening and authentication of cell lines, carrying out functional assays on these cells under conditions of hypoxic or metabolic stress that include cell death assays and immunofluorescence for specific relevant epitopes.
  • Manage and oversee the laboratory mouse colony, including handling live mice to set up breeding programs, monitoring age and well-being of mice in the colony, forward planning to determine what mouse crosses need to be set up, tail-tipping/ear-tagging, monitoring tumor growth, injecting mice with tumor cells and other agents via IP, SQ, IV routes, monitoring responses to cancer therapies and live imaging of mice using the Xenogen bioluminescence system, and assisting in other forms of live mouse imaging.
  • Perform multi-transgene PCR to genotype mouse DNA, carrying out western blots, and immunohistochemical staining of tumor sections, as well as other relevant molecular techniques.
  • Coordinate with clinical workers and being involved in translational cancer research.
  • Oversee laboratory compliance and regulatory protocol submissions in collaboration with PI.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience or Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; a degree in biological sciences is preferred.
  • Experience in a molecular, cell biology, or biochemical research laboratory required.
  • Experience of handling and working with mice is required.
  • Experience in the use of cytometry and immunofluorescent is preferred.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Knowledge if Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint required.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills required.

Working Condition and Physical Requirements:
  • Laboratory environment.
  • Use of standard biochemical laboratory equipment including pipettes, centrifuges, electrophoresis equipment, PCR cyclers, plate readers, computers and autoclave.
  • Manual dexterity and composure is essential for pipeting accurately, carrying out injections, recovering delicate tissues and other procedures.
  • Long periods of time spent on feet or on stool at bench.
  • Some cold room work; long periods in sterile garb in mouse room.
