Position Status: Administrative Exempt Positions

Basic Function:
In coordination with the physics faculty, selects, assembles, fabricates, and sets up laboratory equipment, instruments, components, etc., for the teaching and research activities of the department.


  • Maintains inventory records of department equipment and supplies as authorized and expendable materials on own initative; arranges for outside repair of equipment as necessary.
  • In coordination with faculty, selects, assembles, fabricates, and sets up laboratory equipment, instruments, components, etc., for lecture demonstrations and research activities.
  • Issues laboratory research equipment and materials to faculty and students as requested; informs users of safety precautions in using equipment and instruments.
  • Maintains, repairs, adjusts, installs, calibrates and cleans a wide variety of electrical, electronic, mechanical, optical and related equipment and instruments for both research and department use.
  • Assists other departments as requested in equipment repair, etc. Acts as a resource person for equipment and supplies for other departments as requested.
  • Monitors supplies of hazardous and toxic chemicals used/stored in Olin and maintains inventory records and material safety sheets in accordance with established procedure.
  • Orders laboratory gases and cryogenic liquids and maintains appropriate inventory.
  • Assists Facilities Department in safety presentations; coordinates safety issues with Facilities as assigned.
  • Coordinates with Facilities work orders for the needs of Olin Hall and the department.
  • Directs and supervises the work of students connected with shop activities.
  • Keeps machine and electronic shops equipment and tools in proper repair; orders replacements as necessary.
  • Instructs selected students in the safe operation of equipment and tools. Operates machine and electronic shops equipment to meet the routine needs of faculty and students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • High School graduate with additional schooling and a minimum of 3-5 years of similar work experience.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills and technical background.
