Department:   School of Business and Nonprofit Management (SBNM) 

Reports To: The Dean reports directly to the Provost of the university; supervises the Director of Operations, Axelson Center Director, and all program staff; works with and is responsible for evaluating full-time faculty and part- time instructors who teach in the School of Business and Nonprofit Management.

Position Summary: The Dean manages program aspects of the School of Business and Nonprofit Management and Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management in cooperation with department heads and administrative office directors, and serves on the Deans Council. The Dean will collaboratively set the vision, develop a strategic plan, and implement them in a manner consistent with North Park’s distinctive position as a Christian, city-centered, intercultural university of uncommon character and enduring excellence, where faith, learning, and service meet.

  1. Personal philosophy consistent with the University.
  2. More than 10 years of professional experience in increasingly responsible, diverse, and complex business/academic management environments.
  3. An understanding of the nature of business education and the needs/aspirations of SBNM students, alumni, and employers.
  4. The credibility, leadership, and energetic personality to successfully engage, influence, and leverage a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, specifically to advance curriculum changes, resource needs, fundraising, and employment opportunities for students.
  5. Visionary leader who gives clear direction, treats others fairly and is committed to Equity, Diversity and Inclusive Excellence.
  6. Management of people and programs in industry are relevant; as are roles as a department chair, program director, dean, or other administrator in academia.
  7. Prior experience with acquiring incremental resources (financial and human capital) and fundraising.
  8. Evidence of creating systematic and efficient processes, optimizing resources, and deploying technology to create streamlined operations and flexibility in service for faculty, staff, and students.
  9. Understanding of online and blended degree programs.
  10. Management style that is participative and consensus building, yet decisive and sets high expectations and accountability.
  11. Self-starter with a high energy level and proactive approach.
  12. Viewed by others as a good listener, mentor, and team builder who is able to model positive mutual resolution of conflict.
  13. Evidence of scholarly contribution (publications, research, seminars, presentations).

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Establish vision and strategy for the next phase of SBNM’s activities and be responsible for a variety of strategy-setting, academic, fiscal, personnel, community, fundraising, and campus-wide efforts.
  2. Oversee an expense budget of approximately $2M and 20 direct reports of faculty and staff of the School of Business and Nonprofit Management and Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management.
  3. Evaluate and rationalize SBNM academic programs to align to market needs and NPU distinctives.
  4. Strengthen SBNM recruiting efforts to attract quality and committed students to undergraduate and graduate programs.
  5. Raise the external profile of the SBNM to drive student employment and fundraising opportunities.
  6. Recruit outstanding faculty and administrators and oversee their evaluation and professional development.
  7. Collaborate with the other faculties, Deans, and the Provost.
  8. Supervise the evaluation of the curriculum and instruction, assuring quality control for each.
  9. Oversee the preparation of annual course offerings for the main campus, Grayslake campus, and online offerings.
  10. Work with university marketing to produce a marketing strategy and corresponding advertising that attracts and retains highly qualified undergraduate, graduate, and certificate-seeking students.
  11. Prepare monthly and annual reports for the Provost measuring progress on objectives including student outcomes, admissions, and budgets.
  12. Represent the SBNM to campus, community, and global constituents.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Appreciation for, commitment to, and ability to effectively articulate North Park University’s mission and philosophy of Christian higher education.
  • Undergraduate and graduate education in a business discipline, or a related area; a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is required..
  • A terminal degree (PhD, DBA, EdD, or JD) is strongly preferred.
  • Strategic thinker and visionary leader willing to take calculated risks,
  • Change agent able to align priorities and bring the SBNM team to the next horizon.
  • Exceptional communicator and collaborator with a high level of cultural competency.
  • Comfort working in diverse settings, including globally.
  • Student-centric in matters academic, professional, and personal.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

Create strategic vision and leadership of the SBNM’s next phase of transformation

The SBNM is embracing the opportunity to proactive position the school in a distinctive place given the university’s missions and schools focus. The next Dean will lead the successful development of a cohesive and clear direction for the school, aligned to the university’s strategy and mission, and create alignment within the department to focus on driving this vision forward. The Dean will be asked to comprehensively evaluate the school’s academic offerings (degrees, majors, and certificates), delivery model, faculty model (full-time to adjunct ratios), operations approaches, leadership structure, internal and external relationships, and recognition in the business education marketplace.

As the SBNM goes through the process of executing this vision, the next Dean will provide change leadership and support campus-wide, but specifically foster an environment where faculty and staff are recognized as valued and contributing members of the SBNM community.

Evaluate and rationalize SBNM academic programs to align to market needs and NPU distinctives

The next SBNM Dean will be expected to conduct a thorough academic and programmatic review. Given the direction of business education and overall market/employer needs, SBNM undergraduate and graduate programs should be re-evaluated and revised, as needed, to optimize the school’s delivery of business education. In addition, consideration should be given to challenges faced by declining enrollments in the graduate programs over the last two years (approximately 25% decrease in student enrollments from 2016 to 2018). At the same time, the SBNM has increased its reliance on adjunct faculty and online course offerings, which impact the perceived quality of the SBNM academic experience. The Dean should consider faculty needs and creative approaches to continue to deliver a student-centric, market-valued educational experience.

Strengthen SBNM recruiting efforts to attract quality and committed students to undergraduate and graduate programs

Over the last two years, the SBNM Dean, faculty, and staff have worked across the campus to revise the school’s marketing/admissions messaging and approaches for student recruitment. A variety of efforts have been successful, particularly at the undergraduate level. Undergraduate enrollments were at an all-time high for Fall 2017 and Spring 2018. However, graduate enrollments have continued to decline. Many SBNM faculty have engaged in recruiting and generating creative/practical approaches. The new Dean will be expected to continue these efforts and to provide an integrated strategy for tackling this area to stabilize enrollments, retention, and admissions/recruiting activities for greater long-term success.

 

Raise the external profile of the SBNM to drive student employment and fundraising opportunities

The SBNM Dean will be a visible leader and ambassador who proactively develops relationships with external stakeholders including alumni, employers, business community leaders, and other valuable partners. The is an expectation of specific and tangible goals to bring employment opportunities for students (internships and full-time positions) and for fundraising. NPU has a strong department of Advancement and the Dean should be a collaborative partner, working together to identify strategic projects and funding opportunities to the SBNM and the university. In addition, the Dean should advance opportunities to generate funding for specific faculty scholarship, including grants, research projects, and consulting engagements.

Strengthen departmental relationships and culture, and build greater cross-campus collaboration

The SBNM Dean will be expected to oversee and lead this period of change. The SBNM is a small unit and there is existing collaboration within the department and across campus, but, efforts are needed to strengthen culture and deepen relationships. The SBNM has successfully created courses as part of the overall Catalyst 606_ program. Team teaching has occurred periodically. Integration with the College and other professional schools, particularly Nursing, have begun, but more is possible. The SBNM has an energetic faculty who seek to be involved in the schools next phase, including the development of strategy and the leadership of the school. The next Dean would be expected to consider the organizational and operating model of the school to create a robust model for join administrative and faculty leadership.
