Primary Function of Organization Unit: The USDA-APHIS-PPQ-S&T CPHST Beltsville Laboratory mission is to provide federal confirmatory diagnostics for regulatory plant pests/pathogens; develop and validate advanced molecular and serological detection methods, and proficiency test (PT) panels for plant pests that threaten U.S. agriculture; evaluate applicability of new, state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies in support of the agency efforts.
Essential Job Duties: The Research Scholar position will conduct independent and original research in support of APHIS PPQ CPHST Beltsville Laboratory research in the area of advanced diagnostics platform development such as Digital PCR, Isothermal Amplification-based assays, Next-generation-sequencing, whole genome sequence analysis and methods for sample preparation. The position will provide direct scientific input to determine, through experimentation and application, if these technologies can be applied to the detection and differentiation of high consequence regulatory plant pathogens. The position, if possible, will be responsible for the advancement of these diagnostic platforms for use by federal regulatory surveillance and eradication programs. The research will be informed by other similar technologies under development at the APHIS PPQ CPHST Beltsville Laboratory and the incumbent will be expected to present research findings at professional meetings and to extend these findings to key stakeholders, including plant protection officials at state and federal agencies. *This position is located in Beltsville, MD.*
Minimum Education/Experience: Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or other closely allied fields.
Department Required Skills: * Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Experience with conventional PCR, real-time PCR, DNA sequence analysis, plant pathogen biology and/or diagnostics of pathogens (fungi, bacteria, virus or nematodes). * Experience with diagnostic platform adaptation or evaluation and experience with laboratory procedures of applicable molecular biology and techniques as well as experience with experimental design.
