Job Information

Job Summary:

The Associate Director of Individual Giving(Associate Director) raises $1 to $5M annually to advance the strategic priorities the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM). The Associate Director manages a portfolio of 80 to 100 prospects, which will be individuals, families, foundations and/or organizations. S/he designs and implements fundraising initiatives and also forms and implements identification strategies as well as individualized cultivation and solicitation strategies for prospective donors and donors with the capacity to make gifts in the $100K to $1M range. In so doing, s/he collaborates with UCM faculty, Medical Center Trustees, UCM leaders and administrators, and fellow Medicine & Biological Sciences Development (MBSD) colleagues. S/he collaborates with the Donor Relations team to individualize donor stewardship and in many cases designs and implements stewardship him/herself. The Associate Director will be assigned to specific Departments, and/or Programs and s/he is responsible for building working relationships with a chief /chair and faculty in those Departments as well as prospective donors and donors interested in supporting programs, research and/or facilities in those areas.

Responsibilities:
  • Manages a portfolio of 80-150 prospective donors and donors who are capable of making gifts in the $100K to $4.9M range.
  • Works with MBSD's Leadership Team, UCM faculty, volunteers, and MBSD staff to identify and qualify prospects for support of his/her assigned Divisions, Departments, and/or Programs.
  • S/he takes primary responsibility for building relationships with faculty and administrators in the assigned Departments and/or Programs.
  • Qualifies individuals, rating their capability and likelihood to make a philanthropic gift to MBSD.
  • S/he wisely and judiciously uses the resources of the Research team to augment the identification and qualification of prospective donors.
  • Using a Moves Management process, s/he conceives of, promotes, and coordinates the interaction of potential and current donors with faculty and other individuals who have the ability to deepen the prospective donor's engagement with the University.
  • Conceives of and implements solicitation strategies and will participate in the vast majority of these solicitations.
  • S/he develops solicitation strategy and writes fundraising proposals.


Competencies:
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, characterized by the ability to listen, to speak, and to write well with a strong commitment to customer service is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and a high degree of flexibility and initiative is required.
  • Ability to travel and attend evening and weekend functions when necessary is required.
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Development.
  • An exceptional work ethic and track record of personal initiative is preferred.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with a team of highly motivated individuals is preferred.
  • Familiarity with The University of Chicago is preferred.


Additional Requirements

Education and Experience:

Education:
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher is required.


Experience:
  • A minimum of three years of experience in development or a related field such as public relations, sales, marketing, or volunteer work in a not-for-profit organization is required.
  • Experience managing volunteers is preferred.
    Experience in a university setting or a similarly complex institution is preferred.
  • Experience managing a portfolio of individual donors or volunteers is preferred.
  • Experience in the health care industry is preferred.
