The Office of University Communications provides support and campus leadership in planning, coordination and implementing strategic communication programs that support Stanford University and its missions. University Communications is responsible for brand positioning and strategy; issues and reputation management; crisis communications; oversight of digital content and top level web and social media platforms; media relations and news services; presidential and provostial communications with the public, media and other constituencies (including all speeches); internal communication to faculty and staff; parent communications programs, major publications; and encompasses a campus video production studio and video production group. University Communications coordinates with communications professionals across the university on communications issues and projects, provides leadership to the Communications Working Group, and advises on communications policy with senior executive staff.

The University Communications Graphic Designer will initiate and lead in the development and execution of various projects in the field of visual communication. This position will manage Stanford's visual identity by performing broad-based design tasks across several mediums and demonstrate an understanding of industry standards and trends to provide and enhance visual identity services. The University Communications Graphic Designer will use their expertise to advise and work collaboratively with university clients and partners on complex projects. This position reports to the Senior Director of University Brand Management in University Communications.


  • Independently develop and manage complex, highly creative projects involving abstract or technical content requiring extensive subject matter/client knowledge.
  • Manage Stanford's visual identity:
  • Design visual communication tools (e.g., presentation, brochure and stationery templates) that reflect Stanford's visual identity,
  • Manage the identity toolkit website and keep the standards updated and relevant to the campus community,
  • Help new and existing Stanford units implement unit visual branding in accordance with Stanford's visual identity system,
  • Encourage transitioning toward the standard university identity, and
  • Serve as a campus wide resource on Stanford's visual branding design issues.
  • Play an active role in planning and advising clients to produce highly creative work within the time and cost constraints of client.
  • Provide creative vision, direction and design for complex projects. Determine overall themes for multi-faceted projects as well as individual design concepts.
  • Coordinate production process; develop and write printing and/or other production specification, and select appropriate production media and materials.
  • Perform complex design across a variety of platforms using job-required software applications and in-depth knowledge of principles and practices of visual communications.
  • Partner with and influence clients and key contacts outside own area of expertise.
  • Serve as project leader, may train or provide guidance to less experienced designers.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry standards, trends and state-of-the-art technology to provide and enhance services.

    Education & Experience:

    Bachelor's degree in related field and five years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex, highly creative projects or content requiring extensive subject matter/client knowledge.
  • Ability to present portfolio that reflects extensive creative work and project leadership.
  • Advanced knowledge of job-required software applications.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively resolve complex problems.
  • Ability to manage changing priorities, deadlines, and customer needs.
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to perform detailed work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and training other design staff.
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of industry standards, trends, and technical knowledge.
  • Ability to work effectively with others as part of a team.
    Certifications and Licenses:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, and reach/work above shoulders.
  • Occasionally sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat.
  • Visual acuity including color vision.
