Stanford Medicine is seeking a Senior Data Science Platform Engineer to join the Research IT team in the Office of Information Resources and Technology (IRT) (https://researchit.stanford.edu). Research IT delivers the next generation of tools and services used by researchers, research participants, patients and clinicians to collect, discover, segment and analyze data, make discoveries and improve human health and wellness.

This position will play a leadership role in the design and implementation of a data science platform as part of Research IT's next generation Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW). This is comprised of a data commons including clinical, molecular, and imaging data. She/he will execute all software development tasks, including gathering requirements, designing, implementing, and maintaining multiple cloud-based solutions. The core idea is to bring analytical methods to the data in a secure manner. An example project will be to create specific data storage solutions (e.g. for notes) and bring text mining algorithms to the data as containerized stack and storing the text annotation outputs in a database. Another example project may require bringing predictive analytics to patient care via SMART on FHIR integration with Epic. Other projects will follow over time.

We are looking for someone with the following:
  • Strong expertise in server-side Java programming
  • Good understanding of application security
  • Skilled and experienced with data analysis techniques and tools such as Python, Jupyter, R, MATLAB
  • Experience with cloud technologies such as Google Cloud Platform Storage, Compute, BigQuery, Cloud SQL
  • Working familiarity with modern web development frameworks such as Angular, React, Vue, GWT, etc.
  • Experience with complex data manipulation pipelines with multiple transformations
  • Experience or interest in machine learning approaches including text mining, NLP, image processing, etc.
  • Deep understanding of data and software provenance
  • Strong team player and individual contributor
  • Ability to learn and apply new technologies as needed
  • Prior experience working with researchers and data science either in academic community or in industry is a plus

In addition to your primary role as a senior data science platform engineer, other duties may include:
  • Work with faculty, researchers, and executive stakeholders to gather requirements
  • Harmonize conflicting requirements, communicate tradeoffs to all stakeholders, and propose compromise solutions as needed
  • Work as a project leader, as needed, for projects with dependencies on other groups
  • Serve as a technical resource for applications
  • Follow team software development methodology

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and programming tools.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.
  • Strong understanding of data design, architecture, relational databases, and data modeling.
  • Thorough understanding of all aspects of software development life cycle and quality control practices.
  • Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.
  • Demonstrated experience leading activities on structured team development projects.
  • Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
  • Ability to recognize and recommend needed changes in user and/or operations procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand.
  • Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
