Administer, support, and manage programs or functions under general supervision.

The Communication Department at Stanford University seeks a Manager for the Center for Deliberative Democracy. The Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the center, including: research and grant administration, financial administration, and providing assistance with program management. This position requires a self-starter with high level of independence.

Research administration requires managing all aspects of sponsored and non-sponsored research grants, contracts, sub-awards, and cost share accounts. She/he is responsible for the full range of pre and post award accounting functions. The Manager is responsible for the Center's IRB process, which includes assisting with submission, monitoring, and compliance. She/he should provide recommendations to make decisions quickly in coordination with the Center Director and Deputy Director. Familiarity with Stanford research administration systems is a plus.

Prefer previous program management experience in a university research setting. The Manager provides all monitoring and reporting on grants to ensure grant compliance. May provide support to Director for copy editing and report writing as needed. A working knowledge of federal, foreign government, NGO, and foundation regulations governing research (e.g. OMB A-21) is desired.

The Manager is responsible for producing, reconciling, and maintaining CDD expenditure statements, budgets, and related financial statements. The Manager is the main point of contact for outside vendor contracts, including independent consultants. Prefer a high level of financial management aptitude to ensure accuracy, validity, and to resolve discrepancies. In addition, the Manager must monitor for compliance with university policies, sponsor policies, and relevant regulations.

Prefer familiarity or willingness to learn Oracle Financial application including Labor Distribution, and Labor Adjustment modules.

The Manager may provide assistance with Deliberative Polling program management as needed. These responsibilities may include organizing academic conferences, facilitating collaborations with persons such as academics, government officials, and donors, provide assistance with organization of national and international projects, and provide supporting roles for programs as needed.

May require domestic and foreign travel. Must be willing to work across multiple time zones.


  • Independently implement, administer and evaluate day-to-day activities of the unit, function or program by identifying and executing tasks and objectives, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and assigning resources to achieve the goals of the program.

  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.

  • Analyze and interpret policies; develop, revise and implement procedures for program or function.

  • Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit or school. Commit resources and provide information and/or training. May also represent the program or function to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.

  • Organize and/or participate in outreach activities that may include developing communications and training, planning/promoting events and/or conferences.

  • May participate in development of budgets, monitor, and approve expenditures. May perform limited forecasting and provide recommendations that determine the budget.

  • May direct staff to perform various tasks and assignments. May also supervise staff.

    Education & Experience:

    Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
