About the Position

Working independently under the general supervision of the Network System Analyst, the Laboratory/Facility Support Technician works independently under general supervision to achieve specified outcomes. This position provides support and assist the different units in CHaHS in areas related to preparation, maintenance, and quality control of laboratories and clinics, but also assist in the repair and maintenance of a variety of small laboratory equipment in support of instruction and research. The incumbent in this position is required to interface with a variety of individuals at the department level including Chairs, Directors, staff, and faculty, as well as university personnel to keep laboratories, classrooms, and college space in working order. The incumbent is expected to participate as part of the CHaHS Emergency Safety Team and may be called to assist the Safety Team in the event of an emergency, but also to provide assistance as a member of the CHaHS support team to other areas as needed. The CHaHS support team provides a variety of services vital to the instructional program. The incumbent is responsible for contributing to the day-to-day operation of CHaHS spaces and instructional facilities, located across campus; and coordinating and facilitating programs for laboratory courses. The incumbent is also responsible for hazardous waste collection and categorizing the chemicals according to class for the teaching laboratories. This position requires specified safety training and active participation on the Emergency Safety Team.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide as requested experimental chemicals, supplies and services for faculty, modifying purchased chemicals into reagents for laboratory classes.
- Work with the faculty and assist in the development of laboratory experiments by acting as a resource in chemical or material utilization.
- Perform routine chemical procedures, such as titrations, standardization of acids and bases, and pH specific buffer reagents.
- Prepare chemical reagents and student samples/unknowns for the teaching laboratories. Maintain confidentiality of unknowns.
- Prepare chemical reagents for biochemistry laboratories with chemical and material placement in laboratories for individual experiments as scheduled. The collection and proper storage of experimental waste for biochemistry experiments is also required.
- Maintain small laboratory equipment (e.g., pH meters, UV-Vis., vacuum pumps, Dexa, treadmills, etc.) by maintaining storage solutions, checking and/or adjusting calibrations or changing pump oils as needed.
- Assist in the repair and maintenance of a variety of other small laboratory equipment as needed.
- Maintain a clean and safe working area.
- Perform other duties as assigned including but not limited to moving equipment and supplies between laboratories in the different
- CHaHS units and help with equipment installation.
- Maintain inventory of all lab equipment for all units in CHaHS.
- Assist the different units in CHaHS and performs preventive maintenance and/or troubleshoots appliances/equipment as needed; may include the calibration of hand-held PH meters, and perform small equipement repairs.
- Assist in preparing buffers, reagents, sterile solutions, media, Petri dishes, micropipetting, etc.
- Assist In the hiring and training, as well as oversee the work, of student assistants.
- Assist in overseeing and coordinating lab operations. This includes; clean, defrost, sanitize appliance/equipment in laboratories; counters, cabinets/drawers, sinks/sink area, laboratory furniture, ranges, refrigerators, freezers.
- Maintains all CHaHS spaces including Student Success Centers in working order. Work closely with FD&O for any repairs needed to the the different labs, instructional classrooms, and different spaces in CHaHS.
- Re-organizes and reports any missing/damaged items for repair/replacement.
- Maintain an inventory of all chemicals and reagents needed in advance of each semester's experiments and ensuring that all are in stock before the start of each semester.
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment as needed.
- Work with the assigned faculty member for the disposal of hazardous waste as established by the University's policies and procedures.
- Researches, justifies instructional materials, supplies, equipement, and services in compliance with university guidelines.
- Installs and/or schedules installations and training on new equipment as per manufacurer's guidelines.
- Evaluate research needs for equipment and materials, evaluates initial and operating cost of equipment, prepares requisitions for equipment and supplies, and submits request for purchase.
- Works cooperatively with other technical staff and FD&O to oversee building and equipment maintenance.
- Review laboratory schedules and individual experiments, deliver waste containment bottles to proper laboratories.
- Estimate volume for entire class output and provide appropriate size and number of waste containers.
- Segregate chemical waste collected and categorize by hazardous class from teaching laboratories.
- Weekly check and survey of all waste collection sites for compliance in these biochemistry teaching laboratories.
- Record keeping and updating of chemical and material lists, catalogs and Biochemistry course binders.
- Maintain Certification of Required Safety Training.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline in the specialty area to which assigned and equivalent to two years of experience performing a variety of support services for an instructional program and involving such activities as preparing, producing, dispensing or storing materials, supplies, and equipment or equivalent to one year of experience in ordering, purchasing, accounting or in office work related to technical materials, supplies, or equipment or in an office which provided similar services to a technical function or unit may be substituted for six months of the experience.

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor's Degree in related field, preferred
- Experience in the use of specialized scientific equipment, instrumentation and techniques (some for chemical analysis), including ability to operate and repair equipment.
- Experience (and/or certification) in facility safety and management.
- Proven ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment, including maintaining inventory and equipment.
- Experience with software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database management.
- Experience coordinating the work of others and operations.
- Familiarity with maintenance and repair of facilities, including instructional classrooms, labs, and other College spaces.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Knowledge in the use of scientific equipment, instrumentation and techniques (for both qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis).
- Knowledge of the materials and supplies related to the curriculum, and their characteristics.
- Skills to produce uniformly standardized solutions with specific quality levels
- Ability to operate and repair technical and scientific equipment.
- Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies
- Strong verbal and communication skills.
- Working knowledge in the use of highly specialized electronic instrumentation including testing tools such as multimeters and oscilloscopes, pH meters, optical components used in microscopy, lasers and mass spectrometers.
- Working knowledge of software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database management.
- Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment.
- Ability to handle multiple work priorities
- Ability to organize and plan work and projects.
- Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, strong oral communication skills, punctuation and spelling.
- Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
- Thorough knowledge of chemical compatibility, chemical nomenclature.
- Ability to chemical cross-reference.
- Must possess the ability to segregate chemicals and hazardous chemical waste into specific hazard classes.
- Ability to complete safety training for First Awareness Operations level (FRO), offered by the College of Science Safety Officers.
- Must be able to apply biochemistry techniques such as buffer solution preparation when needed or requested.
