The University of Connecticut, Storrs Campus, is seeking a SHS Clinical Pharmacist 1 (UCP 6) in Student Health Services in the Division of Student Affairs. This a 10-month position from approximately mid-August through mid-June annually.

Under the direction of the designated supervisor, is responsible for provision of patient-centered, outcome-oriented pharmacy practice by working in concert with the patient and other Student Health Service clinicians to promote health and prevent disease. Assess, monitor, initiate, and modify medication use to assure that drug therapy regimens are safe and effective. Ensure that pharmaceutical care is in a manner that optimizes the patient's health, while providing high quality, cost effective, professional standards of service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Collaborates with physicians, nurse practitioners and patients as needed to establish therapeutic objectives; recommends and advises on appropriate drug entities, dosages and dosage schedules; assists in selecting dosage forms, routes and methods; detects and develops recommendations to reverse, prevent or manage any adverse consequences; judges the continuing effectiveness of therapy plans, according to the principles of pharmacokinetics.
  2. Prepares medication for patient use according to current standards of practice in the profession of pharmacy, including compounding of drug products to meet specific patient care needs, taking care to assure toxicity will not occur. Monitors for patient drug allergies, contraindications and interaction with current therapies. Ensures that medications are labeled appropriately and that products are delivered to patients in a timely, safe and efficient manner. Pre-packages medications for use in both in-house and off-site satellite medication areas.
  3. Assists patients or their agents in the selection and proper use of appropriate non-prescription medication, medication administration devices, health aids and accessories.
  4. Counsels patients or their agents to ensure an understanding of the importance, nature and scope of the therapeutic plans being implemented, the appropriate use of medication included in the plans, and the benefits and risks of such plans, reinforcing the prescriber's instructions.
  5. Following the local, state and federal laws which govern the practice of pharmacy and the provision of pharmaceutical care, maintains control records on drugs received and dispensed, including narcotics, poisons, and habit-forming drugs. Maintains records of any and all prescriptions filled. Prepares all reports as required.
  6. Assists in management of systems, which ensure that adequate supplies of drug products are available to meet patient care needs; ensures that drug products are stored under appropriate conditions in both in-house and off-site medication storage areas. Assists in judging the quality of products and selecting vendors based on appropriate data, such as biopharmaceutical, economic and quality control information. Performs annual physical inventory of pharmacy stock and prepare associated reports. Ensures the security of the drug product inventory.
  7. Bills third party prescription insurance carriers on behalf of patients. Provides direction to physicians and nurse practitioners in obtaining any authorizations required to meet special medication needs. Ensures compliance with carriers' protocols; performs therapeutic interventions and drug utilization reviews (DUR); analyzes reimbursements and reports (monthly and annually) to determine claim status and appropriate reconciliation. Assists in selection of new third party carriers based on population needs.
  8. Make recommendations to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee regarding additions, deletions and changes to the drug formulary. Makes recommendations regarding pharmacy policies and procedures.
  9. Serves as a source of advice and information to clinicians and patients on health issues, based on the continual flow of new knowledge and health-related literature available. Counsels patients and serves as resource to clinicians on a variety of health and wellness issues, including the hazards of substance abuse and chemical dependency, self-care, and other public health issues.
  10. Assists clinical staff with ongoing drug studies. Oversees storage, security and disbursement of study medications. Provides related ancillary supplies needed to facilitate such studies.
  11. Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates pharmacy interns. Provides an educational experience to prepare them for entry into the pharmacy profession.
  12. Performs related duties as required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (five-year degree).
  2. Licensed or Registered Pharmacist in the State of Connecticut.
  3. One year or more experience as a staff pharmacist, preferably in a college health or ambulatory care setting.
  4. Ability to effectively communicate with health professionals, students and their parents; understanding the wellness needs of students in an academic setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. PharmD or equivalent
  2. Naloxone certified
  3. Immunization certified
  4. Pyxis/QSI experience
