The Department of Human Genetics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has an exciting career opportunity for a Director, Laboratory Services. This position performs executive level work that is responsible for the overall operation, leadership, direction, and administration of the Clinical Laboratory in accordance with state and federal regulations governing laboratories. The Director, Laboratory Services is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory, including the employment of personnel who are competent to perform test procedures, and record and report test results, promptly, accurate, and proficiently and for assuring compliance with applicable regulation.

The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:
  • Plans develops organize, implement direct and evaluate the organization’s laboratory operations and performance.
  • Ensures that testing systems developed and used for each of the test performed in the laboratory services for all aspects of test performance, which includes the pre-analytic, analytic and post analytic phases of testing.
  • Ensures that the physical plant and environment conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees are protected from physical, chemical and biological hazards.
  • Ensures that the test methodologies selected have the capability of providing the quality of results required for patient care; verification procedures used are adequate to determine the accuracy, precision and other pertinent performance characteristics of the method; and laboratory personnel are performing the test methods are required for accurate reliable results.
  • Ensures that the quality control and quality assurance programs are established and maintained to assure the quality of laboratory services provided and to identify failures in quality as they occur.
  • Ensures the establishment and maintenance of acceptable level of analytical performance for each test system.
  • Ensures that reports of test results include pertinent information required for interpretation.
  • Ensures that consultation is available to the laboratory’s clients on matters relating to the quality of the test results reported and their interpretation concerning specific patient conditions.
  • Employs a sufficient number of laboratory personnel with appropriate education and either experience or training to provide appropriate consultation, properly supervise and accurately perform test results in accordance with the personnel responsibilities described in regulations.
  • Ensures that policies and procedures are established for monitoring individuals who conduct pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of testing to assure that they are competent and maintain their competency to process specimens, perform test procedures and report test results promptly and proficiently, and whenever necessary, identify needs for remedial training or continuing education to improve skills.
  • Ensures that an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel responsible for any aspect of the testing.
  • Establish operations standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety, and complete on-time delivery.
  • Oversees the development of the organization’s plans and programs in evaluation of long-range planning and regulatory action on operational performance. Fosters a unified culture and promotes a process for coloration, cooperation, sharing of information and mutual teamwork.
  • Monitors utilization patterns of lab services and advises Leadership and other appropriate staff of developing trends in clinical service needs.
  • Ensures operational adherence to currently accepted technical service standards for laboratory medicine.
  • Ensures operational adherence to applicable policies and procedures by all technical and operational staff.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of operations budget to ensure compliance with organizational expenditure requirements
  • Leads and direct the development, communication and implementation of effective growth strategies and processes.
  • Performs other related duties.
  • Plans and conducts molecular genetics research studies
  • Prepare research manuscripts and submit to appropriate journals
  • Analyze research data to test hypotheses in molecular genetics
  • Participates in research grants
  • Presents research findings at scientific meetings
  • Supervises trainees and lab personnel

  • The minimum qualifications for this position are as follows: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required. MD or PhD or equivalent preferred. American Board of Medical Genetics Molecular Genetics certified or eligible. Minimum of five (5) years laboratory benchwork experience. Knowledge policies and procedures and regulations regarding molecular and biochemical genetics diagnostic laboratory operations. Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Thorough knowledge of local, State and federal rules, regulations and procedures pertaining to molecular genetics laboratory operations. Ability to work well with interdisciplinary teams. Ability to demonstrate leadership, self-directed and rational problem solving skills. Ability to effectively delegate authority. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing. Ability to clearly and concisely document all issues and procedures relating to Central Supply. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.

    Patient safety is a top priority. As a result, during the Influenza ("the flu") season (September through April), the University of Miami School of Medicine requires all employees who provide ongoing services to patients, work in a location (all Hospitals and clinics) where patient care is provided, or work in patient care or clinical care areas, to have an annual influenza vaccination.
